Deoriatal-Chandrashila — Guide, Dates & Cost
Region: UttarakhandDistrict: Rudraprayag
Duration: 5 Days
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Highest Altitude: 3,962 m / 13,000 ft.
Trekking Distance: 30 Kilometer
Temperature: Daytime: 8°C to 15°C, Night: 0°C to 7°C, Winter (Dec–Jan): Daytime: -2°C to 5°C, Night: -12°C to -5°C
On a still, clear day at Deoriatal, the Chaukhamba massif appears twice: once on the skyline, and once again in the water at your feet. You do not simply stop to look at it. You camp beside it, and watch the reflection hold as the forest around the lake goes quiet for the night. Two days later the same mountain is in front of you again, this time as one summit in a full circle of snow peaks seen from the top of Chandrashila. Between the lake and the summit lie a forest, a meadow and an ancient stone temple.
The Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek joins four of Garhwal’s classic sights on one short route. Deoriatal Lake at 2,390 m (7,841 ft), ringed by oak, rhododendron and maple, with the Chaukhamba massif mirrored in its surface. Rohini Bugyal, an open alpine meadow that turns red and pink with rhododendrons in spring and lies under snow in winter. Tungnath Temple at 3,680 m (12,073 ft), one of the revered Panch Kedar shrines. And Chandrashila Peak at 3,962 m (13,000 ft), where Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Bandarpoonch and the Kedarnath peaks stand together in a 360° panorama. Five days and about 30 km on foot are enough to see all of it.
The Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek is a moderate-grade Himalayan trek in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It begins at Sari village (2,012 m / 6,601 ft), a quiet Garhwali basecamp, and reaches its highest point on the summit of Chandrashila at 3,962 m (13,000 ft). The summit day starts from Chopta (2,679 m / 8,790 ft), often called the Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand, and follows the pilgrim path to Tungnath, known as the highest Shiva temple in the world, before the final climb to the top. In our experience, Chandrashila is one of the most rewarding summits in Uttarakhand for the effort it asks of you.
A Lake, a Temple and a Summit – What Makes the Deoriatal-Chandrashila Trek Unmissable
The Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek is built in layers, and each walking day adds a new one. The first is the lake. The trail from Sari climbs only 3 km through oak, rhododendron and maple, and snow peaks begin to show through the trees before the forest opens around Deoriatal. The lake is steeped in mythology and local folklore, and it has the stillness to match. On a clear day the water holds the Chaukhamba massif so sharply that the landscape seems to exist twice, once above the shoreline and once below it. Because the walk takes only 2–3 hours, you reach the lake with time to spare. You walk along the water as the light changes. You watch the peak settle into the surface while the evening cools and the forest falls silent. On a clear night the stars appear in the lake as well as in the sky. In our experience it is the right way to begin a trek: unhurried, with time to arrive properly in the mountains.
The second layer is faith. Summit day begins with a short drive from Baniyakund to Chopta, and from there the trail climbs through rhododendron and oak forest into wide alpine meadows. This is a pilgrim path as much as a trekking trail, and Tungnath draws devotees and trekkers alike. The temple stands at 3,680 m (12,073 ft), built of ancient stone and set against a wall of high mountains. Then comes the third layer: the summit. Above Tungnath, Chandrashila is only about 1 km away, but the gradient is steep and the altitude makes itself felt. You leave the temple behind. You climb slowly, stopping more often than you expected. The horizon widens with every few steps. Then the ground stops rising, the slope falls away on every side, and there is nothing left above you but sky. Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Bandarpoonch and the Kedarnath peaks stand in a full circle around you. For a few minutes, very little needs to be said.
You retrace your steps past Tungnath, descend to Chopta and return to Baniyakund (2,610 m / 8,562 ft), a meadow camp you already know from the night before. After the enclosed, mirror-still quiet of Deoriatal, Baniyakund feels wide and open, with the sun dropping behind snow-clad summits at the end of the day. Two very different nights, one beside water and one on an open meadow, with a summit between them that, in our experience, repays every step of the climb.
The Forest Itself
Between the lake and the summit, this is a forest trek, and the forest is never just the way to somewhere else. The longest day on the route, about 16 km from Deoriatal to Baniyakund, runs through the oak, maple and rhododendron of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The trail begins with gentle climbs and then turns into rolling ground with some steep descents. Keep an eye on the clearings: this is country where you have a chance of seeing the Himalayan Monal, the colourful state bird of Uttarakhand. Through the gaps in the trees, the Chaukhamba massif and Mount Kedar rise above the ridges for much of the day.
Partway through, the forest breaks open onto Rohini Bugyal, a broad alpine meadow and one of the high points of the trek. In spring it is lit with fiery red and pink rhododendrons; in winter the same slopes lie under an even cover of snow. Of everything on this trek, the forest changes most with the season: flowering in spring, clear and open under autumn skies, white and silent in winter.

Who Is This Trek For?
The Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek is graded Moderate. Fit beginners can do it, but it is more than a gentle walk. The three walking days differ sharply: 3 km in 2–3 hours to Deoriatal, about 16 km in 7–8 hours on rolling forest trail to Baniyakund, and about 11 km in 8–9 hours on summit day. Summit day is the hard one, with about 1,352 m (4,438 ft) of height gain between Baniyakund and Chandrashila, the same height back down, and a steep final kilometre above Tungnath. The long forest day tests you differently, with steep descents that tire the knees. Basic fitness, such as walking 4–5 km a day with a small backpack, is the minimum; good stamina and leg strength make the trek far more enjoyable, especially on steeper or snowy sections. We recommend 6–8 weeks of preparation. Minimum age: 8 years, accompanied by adults. Upper age: depends on fitness, stamina and the ability to handle high altitude. Daily trekking hours: 2–9 hours. Season: January to June and October to December.
Key Highlights of the Deoriatal-Chandrashila Trek
- Deoriatal Lake (2,390 m / 7,841 ft) – a sharp reflection of the Chaukhamba massif on a clear day, with your camp on the lakeshore
- Chandrashila summit (3,962 m / 13,000 ft) – a 360° panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Bandarpoonch and the Kedarnath peaks
- Tungnath Temple (3,680 m / 12,073 ft) – an ancient stone shrine to Lord Shiva, one of the Panch Kedar and known as the highest Shiva temple in the world

Best Time to Do the Deoriatal-Chandrashila Trek
The Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek runs from October right through to June, and across that long window it is really three different treks. The lake and the summit stay the same, but the forest, the meadows and the trail underfoot change completely from one season to the next.
October to December – Autumn into Early Winter (Clear Skies)
Autumn opens the season with clear skies and unobstructed mountain views. The snow peaks of Garhwal stand sharp against the sky from the lakeshore, the forest ridges and the summit. In our experience this is the most dependable time for the Chaukhamba reflection in Deoriatal and the full circle of peaks from Chandrashila. As December approaches the nights grow colder and winter begins to return to the upper trail.
- Trail conditions: Clear trails and open views; colder towards December as winter returns.
- Best for: Sharp mountain views, the Chaukhamba reflection and the clearest summit panorama.
January to March – Snow Season
In the heart of winter, snow covers the meadows, the forest and the summit trail, and this becomes the season for a true snow trek to Chandrashila Peak. Rohini Bugyal lies under an even white cover, and the climb above Tungnath turns into a slow, deliberate walk up a white slope. It is the coldest and most demanding time on the trek. For trekkers who want a snow-covered summit without going to very high altitude, we find this the most rewarding window of the year.
- Temperatures: December–January: Day: -2°C to 5°C | Night: -12°C to -5°C
- Trail conditions: Snow on the meadows, forest trail and summit slopes. Slower going every day.
- Best for: A winter snow trek, snow-covered meadows and a white summit.
April to June – Rhododendron Season
Spring brings pleasant weather and the rhododendrons into bloom. In April and May the forests and the slopes of Rohini Bugyal flush red and pink, and the walk through the sanctuary is at its most colourful. Days are mild and nights at camp are cool rather than bitter, which makes the long forest day and the summit climb far more comfortable. We find this the easiest season for a first Himalayan summit.
- Temperatures: Day: 8°C to 15°C | Night: 0°C to 7°C
- Trail conditions: Pleasant walking weather on forest trail and meadow; rhododendrons in flower.
- Best for: Rhododendron forests, Rohini Bugyal in bloom and comfortable conditions for first-time trekkers.
Trekkaro Recommendation
For a first Himalayan trek in the most comfortable conditions, book an April to June batch, ideally April or May when the rhododendrons are in bloom. For the clearest views of Chaukhamba in the lake and the widest summit panorama, choose October to December. For a full snow trek to Chandrashila, January to March is our pick, provided you are ready for colder nights and slower days on the trail.

Day 1: Rishikesh to Sari
Route Details:
Drive: Rishikesh → Sari (~185 km, 8–9 hrs) | Altitude: 313 m → 2,012 m (6,601 ft) | Stay: Guesthouse / homestay (triple or quad sharing)
Day 1 is a road day from Rishikesh (313 m) to Sari village, the base camp of the trek. Leave early, around 7:00 AM, and you reach Sari by evening without rushing. The 185 km drive takes 8 to 9 hours and follows the river valleys of Garhwal, past the sacred confluences at Devprayag and Rudraprayag and through the town of Srinagar.
Rudraprayag is the last reliable ATM before Sari. Withdraw enough cash there, as ATMs beyond it are unavailable or unreliable. After the river towns, the road climbs through Himalayan villages, green valleys and terraced fields.
Sari is a small, peaceful village and a good place to rest before the walking begins. You check into a homestay or guesthouse on a triple or quad sharing basis, and dinner is served there. Sari has a few small shops for basic trekking items, but we recommend you bring everything you need. Repack your daypack, drink plenty of water and sleep early.
What to Expect:
- Early start from Rishikesh, around 7:00 AM
- 185 km drive (8–9 hrs) via Devprayag, Srinagar and Rudraprayag
- Last reliable ATM at Rudraprayag
- Terraced fields and traditional Garhwali villages on the climb to Sari
- Homestay or guesthouse at the base camp, dinner included
- Overnight: Sari (2,012 m / 6,601 ft)
Day 2: Sari to Deoriatal
Route Details:
Altitude: 2,012 m → 2,390 m (7,841 ft) | Distance: 3 km | Duration: 2–3 hrs | Terrain: gradual forest trail through oak, rhododendron and maple | Stay: Tents by Deoriatal Lake
Day 2 is the shortest and easiest walk of the trek, a gentle way in. You cover 3 km in 2 to 3 hours and gain about 378 m (1,240 ft). The trail climbs gradually out of Sari into thick forest of oak, rhododendron and maple. The gradient never turns hard. Use today to find your walking rhythm and to check that your boots and backpack sit right.
The forest is alive with the songs of Himalayan birds, which makes this stretch a favourite with birdwatchers and photographers. Walk quietly and you hear more. As you gain height, the trees open now and then and the first snow-clad peaks appear in the distance.
Then you reach Deoriatal at 2,390 m (7,841 ft). The lake sits in a ring of forest, and on a clear day its still water holds a sharp reflection of the Chaukhamba massif: the real range above and its mirror image below. Deoriatal also holds a place in local mythology and folklore, which gives it a quiet, spiritual feel.
Camp is set by the lakeside. You arrive early, with lunch and evening snacks served at camp, so the afternoon is yours. Sit by the water, walk the shore and watch the light change on the peaks. Drinking water at camp is boiled or treated with chlorine tablets; check with your trek leader before you refill anywhere else. On a clear night the stars reflect on the lake. Put on warm layers before sunset.
What to Expect:
- Short, gradual 3 km climb with about 378 m (1,240 ft) of height gain
- Oak, rhododendron and maple forest full of birdsong
- Deoriatal Lake and its reflection of the Chaukhamba massif on clear days
- Free afternoon at the lake, with lunch and evening snacks at camp
- Stargazing over the water on clear nights
- Overnight: Tents by Deoriatal Lake (2,390 m / 7,841 ft)
Day 3: Deoriatal to Baniyakund via Rohini Bugyal
Route Details:
Altitude: 2,390 m → 2,610 m (8,562 ft) | Distance: ~16 km | Duration: 7–8 hrs | Terrain: gentle ascents, then rolling forest ridges with steep descents, alpine meadow | Stay: Tents at Baniyakund
Day 3 is the longest day of the trek, nearly 16 km over 7 to 8 hours. The net gain is only about 220 m (721 ft), but that number hides the work. The trail starts with gentle ascents, then turns into rolling terrain with steep descents that test your endurance. Start early, keep your breaks short and regular, and eat and drink a little at each one. On long rolling days, in our experience, steady pacing matters more than speed.
Much of the day runs through the dense oak, maple and rhododendron forest of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The air is fresh and the forest is full of birds. Keep an eye out for the Himalayan Monal, the colourful state bird of Uttarakhand; with luck, you spot one. As you gain height, the Chaukhamba massif and Mount Kedar rise behind the trees, and they stay with you through the day.
The trail then opens onto Rohini Bugyal, a wide alpine meadow and one of the highlights of the trek. In spring, red and pink rhododendrons bloom around it. In winter, it lies under snow. Take a proper break here and refuel, because forest ridges still lie between you and camp.
From Rohini Bugyal, the trail follows those ridges and small clearings, then descends gently to Baniyakund at 2,610 m (8,562 ft). The campsite is a wide, open meadow with snow peaks behind it. Watch the sun dip behind the summits, eat a good dinner and get to bed early. Tomorrow you climb to Tungnath and Chandrashila.
What to Expect:
- Longest day of the trek: nearly 16 km, 7–8 hrs
- Rolling forest terrain with gentle ascents and steep descents
- Oak, maple and rhododendron forest of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary
- Views of the Chaukhamba massif and Mount Kedar, and a chance of seeing the Himalayan Monal
- Rohini Bugyal meadow, with rhododendrons in spring and snow in winter
- Overnight: Tents at Baniyakund (2,610 m / 8,562 ft)
Day 4: Summit Day - Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila, back to Baniyakund
Route Details:
Drive: Baniyakund → Chopta (short drive) | Altitude: 2,679 m → Tungnath 3,680 m → Chandrashila 3,962 m (13,000 ft) | Distance: 11 km | Duration: 8–9 hrs | Terrain: forest and meadow climb, steep final 1 km | Stay: Tents at Baniyakund
Summit day takes you to the Tungnath Temple and the top of Chandrashila. You leave Baniyakund early for the short drive to Chopta at 2,679 m (8,790 ft), a place often called the Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand. This is the starting point of the walk to Tungnath.
The trail from Chopta climbs gradually through rhododendron and oak forest, then opens into wide alpine meadows with the Himalaya behind them. In spring the rhododendrons are in bloom; in winter the slopes are white with snow. The climb is long and steady rather than steep, so settle into a pace you can hold for hours. You reach Tungnath at 3,680 m (12,073 ft), the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the Panch Kedar shrines. The ancient stone temple stands against the mountains, and it is worth a quiet pause before the last climb.
From Tungnath, Chandrashila is only 1 km away, but this is the hard section of the day. The gradient is steep and the altitude is high, which makes the ascent moderately challenging. Take short steps, keep your breathing steady and pause briefly but often. In snow, plant your poles and walk in the line your guide sets. At 3,962 m (13,000 ft), the summit gives you a 360° view of snow-clad peaks: Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Trishul, Bandarpoonch and Nanda Devi.
After time at the top, you retrace your steps to Tungnath, descend to Chopta and return to camp at Baniyakund. Take the steep upper section slowly on the way down. Back at camp, a hot dinner ends the biggest day of the trek.
What to Expect:
- Early start and short drive from Baniyakund to Chopta (2,679 m)
- Steady climb through rhododendron and oak forest and open meadows
- Tungnath Temple (3,680 m / 12,073 ft), the highest Shiva temple in the world
- Steep final 1 km from Tungnath to Chandrashila
- 360° summit view of Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Trishul, Bandarpoonch and Nanda Devi
- Overnight: Tents at Baniyakund (2,610 m / 8,562 ft)
Day 5: Baniyakund to Rishikesh
Route Details:
Drive: Baniyakund → Rishikesh (~200 km, 8–9 hrs) | Altitude: 2,610 m (8,562 ft) → 313 m
The last day is a drive of about 200 km from Baniyakund down to Rishikesh, which takes 8 to 9 hours. You leave the crisp alpine air behind and follow the great rivers of Garhwal down the valleys, winding past sacred confluences and old mountain towns until the hills flatten out into the plains.
It is a good day to sit back and let the trek settle: the lake at Deoriatal, the long forest day to Baniyakund and the view from Chandrashila.
Meals on the road are not included, so keep some cash for a roadside stop. If you have onward travel booked, leave a margin for road delays. We recommend a late-evening or next-day departure from Rishikesh rather than a tight connection.
What to Expect:
- Drive of about 200 km from Baniyakund to Rishikesh, 8–9 hrs
- Road along the rivers of Garhwal, past sacred confluences and mountain towns
- Meals on the road are not included
- Keep a margin for road delays before onward travel
- Arrival in Rishikesh at the edge of the plains
- Trek ends at Rishikesh

- Log in and open My Bookings.
- Choose Cancel Booking on the trek you want to cancel.
- Pick a refund (as per the charges below) or Get TrekCash Voucher instead — the voucher is issued instantly and appears under My TrekCash Vouchers.
Booked offline with our team:
- Compose an e-mail from the registered e-mail ID used at the time of booking.
- Attach a copy of your tax invoice to the e-mail.
- Send both to info@trekkaro.com.
- Your cancellation is effective from the date Trekkaro receives and acknowledges your e-mail.
How to Reschedule Your Trek (Free)
- Once per booking, to another batch of the same trek, free of charge. A request we decline doesn’t count.
- Up to 7 days before departure — both your current and new batch must be at least 7 days away.
- Subject to seat availability for every trekker on the booking.
- Not available for bookings paid fully or partly with a TrekCash Voucher.
- No fee or price difference; add-ons and the number of trekkers stay as booked.
Booked online: My Bookings → Reschedule free → pick a batch. Our team confirms by e-mail and your booking moves once approved. Booked offline: e-mail info@trekkaro.com.
Cancellation Charges
| Cancellation Timeline | Refund | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 30 days or more before departure | 70% Refund | 30% cancellation charge |
| 15 to 29 days before departure | 50% Refund | 50% cancellation charge |
| Within 14 days / No-Show | No Refund | Free rescheduling (once per booking), transfer of booking, or a TrekCash Voucher (100% value, 1-year validity) — available until 7 days before departure |
Free rescheduling or a 100% voucher instead of a refund. At any time from the date of booking until 7 days before departure, you can reschedule to another batch free of charge (once per booking, subject to seat availability), transfer your booking to another trekker, or take a TrekCash Voucher worth 100% of the amount paid, valid for 1 year — whichever refund slab would otherwise apply. Online bookings take the voucher themselves from My Bookings → Cancel Booking (issued instantly); offline bookings request it by e-mail to info@trekkaro.com.
Cancellation of Voucher-Based Bookings
- The standard cancellation policy applies to voucher-based bookings in the same way it applies to direct bookings.
- Any remaining balance after the applicable cancellation charge has been deducted will be credited back to your Trekkaro account as a new voucher.
- If your voucher has already expired at the time of cancellation, no refund, credit, or extension will be issued under any circumstance.
- If a voucher is set to expire on a Sunday or public holiday, it must be redeemed before the expiry date.
Additional Terms
- Free Rescheduling: Switching to a different batch of the same trek is free of charge once per booking, up to 7 days before departure, subject to seat availability. Not available for bookings paid with a TrekCash Voucher. See “How to Reschedule Your Trek” above.
- Trek Transfers: Transferring your booking to another person is permitted, subject to Trekkaro's eligibility criteria. The new trekker must meet the fitness, age, and documentation requirements for that particular trek.
- No Refund Post-Commencement: Once the trek has commenced from Day 1 of your confirmed itinerary, no refunds or TrekCash Vouchers will be issued for any reason, including early exit, illness, or dissatisfaction with services.
- Policy Changes: Trekkaro reserves the right to amend or withdraw this cancellation policy at any time without prior notice. The version in effect at the time of your booking confirmation governs your booking.
Early Exit or Removal from Trek
A trekker may be required to leave the trek before completion for health concerns (AMS, hypertension, cardiac symptoms, or fitness that poses a safety risk), rule violations (alcohol or non-prescribed drugs on trail, smoking in prohibited zones, reckless behaviour, or misconduct), or by their own decision. In all cases of early exit or removal, no refund, partial refund, or TrekCash Voucher will be provided, and any additional transport or exit expenses are the trekker's responsibility. The trek leader's decision on health and safety grounds is final.
If Trekkaro Cancels Your Trek
In rare circumstances beyond our control — natural disasters (extreme snowfall, avalanche, floods, landslides, earthquakes) or unforeseen civil events (government curfews, lockdowns, political unrest) — Trekkaro will issue a TrekCash Voucher for the full trek fee paid, valid for 12 months on any trek listed on Trekkaro.com. If the new trek costs more, the difference is payable by the trekker. The voucher is sent to your registered e-mail within 10 working days and may be transferred to another person who meets Trekkaro's eligibility requirements.
Refund Processing
Refunds are processed within 10 working days of cancellation approval and credited to the original payment method only (credit card, debit card, net banking, UPI, or wallet). Your bank may take another 3–5 business days. Office hours: Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM IST.
The full policy is part of our Terms & Conditions (Section 09).
Oxygen, first aid, daily SpO₂ checks, trained leaders — tap to read
At Trekkaro, we redefine the trekking experience with our Free Trekking Gear (FTG) initiative — a game-changer in the adventure travel industry. We equip our trekkers with top-tier trekking gear at zero additional cost, including premium Decathlon products like:
• Shoes (worth ₹6,999)
• Insulated Jackets (-10°C) (worth ₹3,299)
• Trekking Poles (worth ₹1,299)
This ensures every adventurer, whether first-time or experienced, can enjoy the mountains without the financial burden of buying expensive gear. It's trekking made accessible, safe, and seamless.
1. Gear Built for the Mountains
Our high-performance tents and sleeping bags are engineered for extreme alpine conditions.
• Sleeping Bags: Designed to endure temperatures as low as -5°C to -20°C
• Tents: Provide additional insulation and wind protection for a warm, secure rest each night.
We are always prepared for unpredictable mountain weather — and encourage trekkers to share any safety concerns with our team for quick support.
2. Health Monitoring: Daily Oxygen & Pulse Checks
Your well-being is our priority. For high-altitude treks, we conduct daily oxygen saturation and pulse monitoring (as needed) before and during the trek.
This proactive step helps us:
• Detect early signs of altitude sickness
• Make informed decisions for your safety.
• Ensure every trekker remains fit and comfortable throughout the journey.
3. Emergency Support & Medical Backup
- Oxygen Cylinders & Medical Kit:
Altitude affects everyone differently. Our guides are equipped with portable oxygen cylinders and essential first-aid medicines for immediate use in case of altitude-related symptoms.
Tip for trekkers: Stay physically prepared — activities like running, cycling, and swimming greatly improve endurance at high altitudes.
- Stretchers at Every Campsite:
In case of emergencies or injuries, stretchers are available at all campsites, ensuring a safe and swift evacuation to base camp for further care.
- Radio Communication Across Camps:
Cell networks can be unreliable in the mountains. To bridge the gap, our camps and guides stay connected via a dedicated radio communication system, ensuring quick response in cases of bad weather, missing items, or medical needs.
4. Technical Support on Snowy Slopes
For treks involving snow-covered or technically challenging terrain, our trained technical team is deployed to assist. They ensure:
• Proper route safety
• Emergency handling
• Support in difficult sections like icy slopes or narrow ridgelines

Rudraprayag is the last reliable ATM stop before you reach Sari (the basecamp). Withdraw sufficient cash here, as ATMs beyond this point are either unavailable or unreliable.
• Mobile Network – Sari
Lohajung is the last point where you can expect a stable mobile signal. Finish all important calls here and inform your family about limited connectivity during the trek. Beyond Lohajung, mobile networks are patchy to non-existent.
