Trekking in February: what to expect
February is the month with the most snow on the trail. Everything that fell in December and January is still there, fresh falls keep topping it up, and the forest sections that were patchy in December are fully white. What changes is the light: days are longer than in January and the sun has more warmth, so afternoons at camp are 2 to 12°C while nights stay at -8 to -14°C at the high camps. The combination of deep snow and a little more daylight is why many trek leaders pick February over January for a first snow trek.
The treks are the same as January: Kedarkantha and Brahmatal for the classic snow summit, Kuari Pass for the Nanda Devi view, Chopta Chandrashila and Dayara Bugyal for a shorter trip, Nag Tibba and Benog Tibba for a weekend from Dehradun. The snow is at its deepest on the summit ridges, which makes the final climb slower and the descent on microspikes the most careful part of the day. Chadar finishes in the second half of February as the Zanskar ice thins; the last batches leave by 20 February.
There are no long holiday weekends in February, so batches are quieter than in December and January and seats are easier to find at short notice. Pack as for January: thermals, a fleece, an insulated layer, a windproof shell, a woollen cap, liner and insulated gloves, two pairs of warm socks, sunglasses, sunscreen and a headlamp. On treks with Free Trekking Gear the -10°C jacket, trekking shoes, poles, gaiters and microspikes come with the booking, and tents and -20°C sleeping bags are provided on camping treks.

Yes, February has the most snow on the trail of any month on the Uttarakhand winter treks: the summit ridges and high camps of Kedarkantha, Brahmatal and Kuari Pass are under deep, settled snow, and the forest camps are white. Fresh falls through the month keep it topped up.
Is February warmer than January for a snow trek?
Slightly, and the difference is daylight more than temperature. Days are longer and the sun warmer, with afternoons of 2 to 12°C at camp, while nights at the high camps stay at -8 to -14°C. The extra daylight is why many leaders prefer February for a first snow trek.
When does the Chadar trek end in February?
The frozen Zanskar is walkable until the second half of February; Trekkaro's last Chadar batches start by 20 February, after which the ice thins and the trek closes for the season. Book the January or early-February departures for the most reliable ice.
Which treks run in February, and are seats easier to find?
