Beyond Chakrata, the road runs out of houses and into deodar. Walk in from Lokhandi, spend one night in a forest that feels far older than the army town below it, and climb before dawn to Vyas Point, where the whole snow wall of the Garhwal Himalaya lines up across the north. Deoban is a weekend trek that trades crowds for silence, and you will have to look hard to find a quieter forest within a day of Delhi.
The Deoban trek explores the deodar and oak forests above Chakrata in the Jaunsar-Bawar area of Dehradun district, Uttarakhand. The name means ‘forest of the gods’, and the deodar itself takes its name from the same idea. The trek starts at Lokhandi, a hamlet on the road beyond Chakrata at 2,560 m (8,400 ft), spends a night at a forest camp at Saraswati at 2,500 m (8,202 ft), climbs through the Deoban forest past an old forest rest house to Vyas Point at 2,900 m (9,514 ft), and ends at Koti Kanasar at 1,980 m (6,496 ft). Total walking is about 19 km over 2 days.
Local belief links the high ridge to the sage Ved Vyas, who is said to have meditated in these forests, and the area has its own living culture: Jaunsari villages with wooden houses, their own gods and festivals, and a way of life quite different from the rest of Garhwal. Chakrata itself is an Indian Army cantonment, which has kept the region free of big hotels and heavy traffic. It also means the trek is open only to Indian nationals, who carry original photo ID through the checkpoints.
A Forest of the Gods – What Makes the Deoban Trek Unmissable
Deoban is a trek about trees before it is a trek about views. The deodars here are tall, straight and old, and between them grow banj and kharsu oak, rhododendron and, higher up, open grassy clearings. The forest floor is soft with needles. In winter the snow settles on the branches and turns the whole ridge silent; in spring the rhododendrons add red to the green. Birds are everywhere: Himalayan woodpeckers, laughingthrushes, tits and, with luck, a pheasant crossing the path.
Then there is Vyas Point. You leave camp in the dark on Day 2 and climb through the forest to the open top of the ridge, and as the light comes up the Himalaya appears across the whole northern horizon. On a clear morning you see Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini and Kala Nag (Black Peak), the Gangotri group, the Kedarnath peaks and Chaukhamba to the north-east, and the snow peaks of Kinnaur and the Shrikhand range in Himachal to the north-west. It is a wide view for a summit of under 3,000 m, because nothing higher stands between Deoban and the main range.
Few trekkers come here. Most visitors to Chakrata stop at Tiger Falls or the town viewpoints, and the forests above stay empty, which is exactly why we like it. Expect a quiet trail, a camp with only your group around it, and an evening sky full of stars. The drive is part of the experience too: from the plains at Vikasnagar the road crosses the Yamuna near Kalsi, home to an Ashokan rock edict, and climbs bend after bend through pine and oak to Chakrata, with the Doon valley falling away behind you. By the time you reach Lokhandi the town is behind you and the forest has taken over.
The Trail Itself
The Deoban trail is a forest walk on a well-defined path, with gentle ups and downs rather than one long climb. From Lokhandi the first day is short: about 4 km through deodar and oak, with the ground rolling along the side of the ridge, to the clearing at Saraswati. The second day is the long one. It climbs at a steady gradient through the Deoban forest to the old forest rest house and the open ridge at Vyas Point, returns through the forest past Saraswati, and then drops for a long stretch through thinning forest and village paths to Koti Kanasar. The final descent is the part that tests the knees.
Who Is This Trek For?
The Deoban trek is graded easy, and we recommend it for first-time trekkers, families with children who walk well, and working trekkers looking for a quiet weekend in the forest. Day 1 is a gentle 4 km walk of 2–3 hours. Day 2 is the hard day: about 15 km and 6–7 hours on foot, with an early start for Vyas Point and a long descent to Koti Kanasar, followed by a 4-hour drive back to Dehradun. We recommend three to four weeks of preparation with regular walks, jogging or stair climbing. Children aged 8 and above can join with a parent or guardian. Above 60: a doctor’s fitness certificate is needed, and an ECG or TMT report is recommended. Season: September to April.
Key Highlights of the Deoban Trek
- The forest of the gods – old deodar, oak and rhododendron forest above Chakrata, with almost no other trekkers
- Vyas Point at 2,900 m (9,514 ft) – a ridge-top view of Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Kala Nag, the Gangotri group, the Kedarnath peaks and Chaukhamba
- Himachal on the horizon – the Kinnaur and Shrikhand snow peaks to the north-west on clear mornings
- A night in the forest – camping at Saraswati among deodar and oak at 2,500 m
- The old Deoban forest rest house – a quiet stone building on the ridge, on the way to Vyas Point
- Snow within a weekend – from December to February the forest and the ridge can lie under snow
- Jaunsari villages – wooden houses and a culture of their own around Chakrata and Kanasar
- Birdwatching – woodpeckers, laughingthrushes, tits and pheasants in the forest
Best Time to Do the Deoban Trek
The Deoban trek runs from September to April. We do not run it from May to August: the monsoon brings leeches, slippery forest paths and landslides on the hill roads, and the summer haze hides the peaks. Each window gives the forest a different mood.
September to November – Autumn (Clearest Views)
Autumn gives the sharpest mountain views from Vyas Point, with clean air after the monsoon and the forest still green. Days are 10°C to 18°C, and nights at camp fall to about 0°C to 8°C, the colder end in November. The first frost appears on the clearings late in the season.
December to February – Winter (The Snow Season)
This is Deoban at its most magical. Snow can cover the trail, the camp and the ridge, the deodars stand white against a blue sky and the forest goes quiet. Days are 2°C to 10°C, and nights at camp drop to about -6°C to 0°C. Microspikes and gaiters come with Free Trekking Gear, and warm layers are essential. Heavy snowfall can close the road above Chakrata for a day or two, so keep your return plans flexible.
March and April – Spring (Rhododendron Season)
As the snow melts from the lower slopes, rhododendrons bloom red through the forest, and patches of old snow can remain on the higher ground into March. Days are pleasant at 10°C to 18°C, and nights at camp are about 0°C to 6°C. The views of the high peaks are still good in the early morning before the haze builds.

Transport is not included in the trek fee: we help the group book shared cabs, paid directly to the driver and split among trekkers, from Dehradun Railway Station at 06:30 AM to Lokhandi. Your trek coordinator will confirm the cab fare.
Day 1: Dehradun to Lokhandi, Trek to Saraswati
Route Details:
Drive: Dehradun → Lokhandi, 110 km, about 4 hrs | Trek: Lokhandi → Saraswati | Distance: 4 km | Duration: 2–3 hrs | Altitude: 2,560 m → 2,500 m
The group meets at Dehradun Railway Station at 06:30 AM and leaves in shared cabs for the hills. The road runs west through Vikasnagar and crosses the Yamuna plain to Kalsi, where it begins to climb, through Sahiya and up the long series of bends to Chakrata. Keep your original photo ID handy: Chakrata is an army cantonment and there are checkpoints on the way. Breakfast is at a roadside dhaba, at your own cost.
Beyond Chakrata the road leaves the town behind and climbs into the deodar forest to Lokhandi, a small hamlet at 2,560 m (8,400 ft), about 110 km and 4 hours from Dehradun. Here you meet the trek team, collect your packed lunch and start walking. The trail sets off along the side of the ridge on a clear forest path, rolling gently up and down rather than climbing hard.
The 4 km to Saraswati take 2–3 hours at an easy pace. Deodar and oak close in around the path, with rhododendron in the understorey, and openings in the trees give you glimpses across the valleys of Jaunsar. Listen for woodpeckers and laughingthrushes. In winter the path can be under snow from the start, which slows the walk a little but makes it beautiful. The trek leader keeps the pace relaxed so that everyone arrives fresh.
Camp is a clearing in the forest at Saraswati, at 2,500 m (8,202 ft), with tents already pitched. There is time for tea and a walk around the camp as the light goes gold through the deodars. The trek leader checks everyone’s SpO2 and pulse and briefs the group on the early start for Vyas Point. Dinner is early, the cold comes in quickly after sunset, and the sky is full of stars.
What to Expect:
- 06:30 AM pickup at Dehradun Railway Station
- Drive via Vikasnagar, Kalsi and Chakrata, with ID checks at the cantonment
- Short, gentle forest walk from Lokhandi through deodar and oak
- Birds and glimpses across the Jaunsar valleys
- Evening health check and briefing for summit day
- Overnight: camp at Saraswati
Day 2: Saraswati to Vyas Point and Koti Kanasar
Route Details:
Trek: Saraswati → Deoban → Vyas Point → Saraswati → Koti Kanasar | Distance: 15 km | Duration: 6–7 hrs | Altitude: 2,500 m → 2,900 m → 1,980 m | Drive: Koti Kanasar → Dehradun, 116 km, about 4 hrs
The day starts at about 5:00 AM with a hot drink, and the group leaves camp by headlamp. The trail climbs at a steady gradient through the Deoban forest, the oldest and densest stretch of the trek, where tall deodars and oaks shut out the sky. As the light grows, the path passes the old Deoban forest rest house, a quiet stone building in a clearing, and comes out onto the open top of the ridge.
Vyas Point, at 2,900 m (9,514 ft), is the highest point of the trek. On a clear morning the Himalaya stands across the whole northern horizon: Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini and Kala Nag, the Gangotri group, the Kedarnath peaks and Chaukhamba, with the snow peaks of Kinnaur and the Shrikhand range in Himachal to the north-west. In winter the ridge can be under snow and the trek team helps you on the slippery sections. Spend time here before turning back.
The group returns through the forest to Saraswati for breakfast and to pack up camp. From here the trail begins its long descent to Koti Kanasar, first through the forest and then through thinner woods and open slopes with views over the Jaunsari villages below. This is the longest stretch of the day and hard on the knees, so use your trekking poles and take it steadily. Packed lunch is eaten on the way.
The trek ends at Koti Kanasar, at 1,980 m (6,496 ft), after about 15 km and 6–7 hours on foot. The cabs meet the group here for the drive back through Chakrata to Dehradun, about 116 km and 4 hours, reaching Dehradun Railway Station in the evening. Plan your onward train or bus for late night or the next day, in case of delays on the hill road.
What to Expect:
- Pre-dawn start at about 5:00 AM through the Deoban forest
- The old Deoban forest rest house on the ridge
- Sunrise view from Vyas Point across the Garhwal and Himachal peaks
- Breakfast back at the Saraswati camp
- Long descent through forest and village paths to Koti Kanasar
- Drive back to Dehradun, arriving in the evening
- Overnight: no stay (trek ends in Dehradun)

The Deoban trek is open to Indian nationals only, because Chakrata is an access-restricted Indian Army cantonment where foreign nationals face strict restrictions. Indian trekkers need no special permit; Trekkaro arranges the forest entry permit at the forest barrier, included in the trek fee. Carry an original government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence) for the checkpoints around Chakrata and the forest barrier, and avoid photographing army areas.
There is limited mobile network and no ATM on the Deoban trek. Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in Chakrata, signal is patchy at Lokhandi, and there is little or no signal at the Saraswati camp and in the Deoban forest, with patches on the open ridge. The last reliable ATMs are in Vikasnagar and Dehradun, so carry cash in small notes from Dehradun.

| 8 to 14 days before departure | No cash refund of the trek fee | You can take a 100% TrekCash Voucher (valid 1 year), a free reschedule (once per booking) or a transfer to another trekker |
| 7 days or less before departure, or no-show | No refund of the trek fee | None: no voucher, reschedule or transfer |
A 100% voucher instead of a refund. From the day you book until 8 days before departure, you can take a TrekCash Voucher worth 100% of the amount paid, valid for 1 year on any Trekkaro trek. This works in every slab above, including 8–14 days, when there is no cash refund. Online bookings take the voucher from My Bookings → Cancel Booking (issued instantly). Offline bookings ask for it by e-mail to info@trekkaro.com.
If you paid the FTG security deposit and the washing charge, both are refunded in full when you cancel before the trek starts, in every slab.
Cancellation of Voucher-Based Bookings
- The standard cancellation policy applies to voucher-based bookings in the same way it applies to direct bookings.
- Any remaining balance after the applicable cancellation charge has been deducted will be credited back to your Trekkaro account as a new voucher.
- If your voucher has already expired at the time of cancellation, no refund, credit, or extension will be issued under any circumstance.
- If a voucher is set to expire on a Sunday or public holiday, it must be redeemed before the expiry date.
Additional Terms
- Free Rescheduling: Switching to a different batch of the same trek is free of charge once per booking, up to 8 days before departure, subject to seat availability. Not available for bookings paid with a TrekCash Voucher. See “How to Reschedule Your Trek” above.
- Trek Transfers: You can transfer your booking to another person up to 8 days before departure, by e-mail. The new trekker must meet the fitness, age and document rules of that trek. See “How to Transfer Your Booking” above.
- No Refund Post-Commencement: Once the trek has commenced from Day 1 of your confirmed itinerary, no refunds or TrekCash Vouchers will be issued for any reason, including early exit, illness, or dissatisfaction with services.
- Policy Changes: Trekkaro reserves the right to amend or withdraw this cancellation policy at any time without prior notice. The version in effect at the time of your booking confirmation governs your booking.
Early Exit or Removal from Trek
A trekker may be required to leave the trek before completion for health concerns (AMS, hypertension, cardiac symptoms, or fitness that poses a safety risk), rule violations (alcohol or non-prescribed drugs on trail, smoking in prohibited zones, reckless behaviour, or misconduct), or by their own decision. In all cases of early exit or removal, no refund, partial refund, or TrekCash Voucher will be provided, and any additional transport or exit expenses are the trekker's responsibility. The trek leader's decision on health and safety grounds is final.
If Trekkaro Cancels Your Trek
In rare circumstances beyond our control — natural disasters (extreme snowfall, avalanche, floods, landslides, earthquakes) or unforeseen civil events (government curfews, lockdowns, political unrest) — Trekkaro will issue a TrekCash Voucher for the full trek fee paid, valid for 12 months on any trek listed on Trekkaro.com. If the new trek costs more, the difference is payable by the trekker. The voucher is sent to your registered e-mail within 10 working days and may be transferred to another person who meets Trekkaro's eligibility requirements.
Refund Processing
Refunds are processed within 10 working days of cancellation approval and credited to the original payment method only (credit card, debit card, net banking, UPI, or wallet). Your bank may take another 3–5 business days. Office hours: Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM IST.
The full policy is part of our Terms & Conditions (Section 09).

1. Trained Trek Leaders
- Trek leaders hold NIM (Nehru Institute of Mountaineering) certification or an equivalent qualification
- Their training covers casualty assessment, high-altitude medical response, rope work and evacuation
2. Daily Health Checks
- Blood oxygen (SpO2) and pulse are checked for every trekker every day
- A falling SpO2 reading is acted on early, before it turns into Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
- If you are not fit to continue, the trek leader will ask you to rest or descend; the trek leader’s decision on health and safety is final
3. Emergency Equipment
- Portable oxygen cylinders carried with the group
- First-aid and medical kit with the trek team
- Stretchers for emergency evacuation
- Radio communication across the trek team, as mobile signal is not reliable on the trail
4. Proper Trekking Gear
- Free Trekking Gear, with no rental fee: Decathlon trekking shoes with good grip, a jacket rated to -10°C, trekking poles, gaiters and microspikes
- No one walks in worn-out or wrong gear, the cause of many slips and cold injuries
5. Tents and Sleeping Bags
- Sleeping bags rated to -20°C, and tents shared by three trekkers, with men and women in separate tents
6. Snow and Steep Sections
- On snow, ice or exposed ground, the trek team fixes ropes and cuts steps where needed and helps you across
7. Risks on the Deoban Trek
- Highest point: 2,900 m (9,514 ft)
- Day 2 is long: a pre-dawn climb to Vyas Point and a 15 km day ending in a long descent to Koti Kanasar
- Snow and ice on the trail and the ridge from December to February, and heavy snowfall can close the road above Chakrata
- Hill roads beyond Chakrata are narrow and winding
8. Your Part
- Build your fitness before the trek with running, cycling or swimming
- Tell the trek leader about any medical condition and the medicines you carry before Day 1
- Report a headache, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness to the trek leader at once
- Carry travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation

- An itinerary planned for altitude, with daily distance and height gain set so your body can adjust

2. What We Expect From You
- A willing attitude: cold nights, steep climbs and sudden weather changes are part of the mountains
- Physical preparation: you do not need to be an athlete, but train before the trek so the longest day feels comfortable

2. Mobile Network
- Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in Chakrata; signal is patchy at Lokhandi
