Kedarkantha Trek in February: Deep Snow & Fewer Crowds

Quick answer: February is one of the best months for the Kedarkantha trek. The trail is under deep snow from Juda Ka Talab to the summit, days on the trail run from about -2°C to 8°C, and nights at camp drop to -10°C to -15°C. It is a 5-day, easy–moderate trek from Sankri, with a batch starting every day of the month.

If you missed the December and January rush, February gives you the same deep-snow Kedarkantha with fewer people on the trail. Here is what the month is really like, how cold it gets, and how to plan it.

What February brings

  • Deep snow, almost guaranteed. January and early February bring the heaviest snowfall of the season, so the forest, the meadows and the summit ridge are all white.
  • A frozen Juda Ka Talab. The little lake at your first camp is usually frozen solid and snow-covered.
  • Quieter trails. The Christmas and New Year crowds are gone, and weekday batches are noticeably smaller.
  • Longer days. You get more daylight than in December, which helps on the long summit day.

Snowfall varies from year to year, and a fresh spell can arrive any week. Your trek leader adjusts timings to the conditions on the day.

How cold is Kedarkantha in February?

Where and whenTypical temperature
On the trail, daytime-2°C to 8°C
Juda Ka Talab camp, nightAround -10°C
Base camp, night-10°C to -15°C
Summit at sunrise, with windCan feel below -15°C

Dress in layers: thermals, a fleece, a down or synthetic jacket, a waterproof shell, two pairs of gloves, a woollen cap and warm socks with a spare pair for camp. Trekkaro's sleeping bags are made for sub-zero nights, and the free -10°C jacket, trekking shoes, gaiters and microspikes come with every booking. See our winter trek packing list for the full kit.

Why February is a smart Kedarkantha month

  • Snow without the holiday crowd. You get winter conditions at their fullest, without December's queues at the summit.
  • A batch every day. Trekkaro runs a Kedarkantha batch starting on every date in February 2027, so you can fit it around your leave.
  • Good for first-timers. The trail is well marked, the daily distances are short, and the team carries oxygen and checks your SpO₂ and pulse.
  • Low cost with free gear. You don't need to buy or rent snow boots, a heavy jacket or microspikes.

February tips for Kedarkantha

  1. Pick a weekday start if you can. Batches that start midweek are usually the quietest.
  2. Reach Dehradun the night before. The shared taxi to Sankri leaves Dehradun Railway Station at 6:30 AM.
  3. Draw cash at Purola. It is the last reliable ATM, and cards don't work on the mountain.
  4. Carry an insulated bottle. Ordinary bottles freeze at base camp; warm water on summit night makes a big difference.
  5. Train for the summit day. Climbing stairs or walking uphill 3–4 times a week for a month makes the 2:00 AM start far easier.

What it costs

The Kedarkantha trek costs ₹9,000 + 5% GST (₹9,450) per person with Trekkaro, Sankri to Sankri. That includes stays, meals, permits, the trek team and free trekking gear. The shared Dehradun–Sankri taxi costs about ₹6,500 per vehicle each way, split among 5–6 trekkers, and EMI starts at about ₹463 a month. See the full Kedarkantha trek cost breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

Is there snow on Kedarkantha in February?

Yes. February has some of the deepest snow of the year on Kedarkantha, usually from Juda Ka Talab all the way to the summit. Late February can soften the snow on the lowest forest section, but the upper trail stays white.

How cold is Kedarkantha in February?

Daytime temperatures on the trail are about -2°C to 8°C. Nights at camp drop to around -10°C to -15°C, and the summit feels colder at sunrise because of the wind.

Is Kedarkantha good for beginners in February?

Yes, if you are reasonably fit. The daily distances are short, the trail is well marked and Trekkaro provides microspikes, gaiters and a -10°C jacket. Train for a month so the 9 km summit day feels comfortable.
