Quick answer: Of our 29 Uttarakhand treks, the highest is Bali Pass at 4,950 m (16,241 ft), then Kedartal 4,912 m, Vasuki Tal 4,880 m and Roopkund 4,800 m. All four have May–June and September–October as best months and are not first treks. The highest you can reach on an easy–moderate trek is Hemkund Sahib, 4,329 m, on Valley of Flowers.
This list is for trekkers choosing an Uttarakhand trek by height, from the highest point that is safe on a first trek to a 16,000 ft pass. It covers the 29 Uttarakhand routes on our site, not every trail in the state. Uttarakhand also has higher expedition crossings that we do not run, so this list stops at Bali Pass. Each height, grade and season below is taken from that trek's page on trekkaro.com, checked on 21 October 2026.

Two things stand out. Height does not set the grade: Valley of Flowers, at number 7, is graded easier than several treks below it. And Aancha Top, Kuari Pass and Kedarkantha finish within 8 m of each other, so pick between those three on season, days and views, not on height.
Above 4,500 m: the five highest
Bali Pass, 4,950 m
About 59 km in 8 days, from Sankri over the pass to Janki Chatti. The trek page says it is meant only for experienced trekkers, with at least one previous high-altitude trek above 4,000 m. Minimum age 16. Its 2027 batches run from May to September.
Kedartal, 4,912 m
About 38 km in 6 days, from Gangotri to the lake. Graded Moderate–Difficult; the page says it is not a first trek and suits trekkers with some high-altitude experience. Minimum age 16.
Vasuki Tal, 4,880 m
This is the longest trek on the list, about 71 km in 9 days, from Gangotri past Gaumukh and Tapovan to the lake. Graded Difficult and not a first high-altitude trek. Minimum age 16.
Roopkund, 4,800 m
About 47 km in 7 days from Lohajung, with the walk starting at Wan. Graded Moderate–Difficult, and the page says it is not a beginner trek. Minimum age 12.
Pangarchulla Peak, 4,593 m
About 39 km in 7 days, with the walk starting at Tugasi, about 12 km from Joshimath. Graded Difficult and not suitable as a first trek; the page asks for at least one moderate high-altitude trek before it. Minimum age 14. It is the only trek above 4,500 m on our list with March batches; the trek page shows 5 in March 2027, and 5 in November 2026.
4,000 to 4,500 m: high, but within reach
- Gaumukh Tapovan, 4,463 m: about 46 km in 7 days from Gangotri, to the Tapovan meadow. Graded Moderate–Difficult and not recommended as a first Himalayan trek. Minimum age 16, and a medical certificate is mandatory on this route.
- Valley of Flowers, 4,329 m: about 50 km over four trekking days. The valley is the gentle part; the highest point is the climb to Hemkund Sahib, about 1,280 m of gain in 6 km, which needs solid fitness. The first 2027 batch is on 3 July.
- Dodital–Darwa Pass, 4,150 m: 36 km in 6 days from Agoda. The lake walk to Dodital suits beginners; for the extension to Darwa Top the page asks for good fitness and, ideally, some prior high-altitude experience. The page lists batches from October to December 2026 and in March 2027, but it does not say that Darwa Top is reached in deep winter.
Before you book a trek above 4,000 m
Each of the eight trek pages above 4,000 m asks for a medical certificate signed by a doctor, an original government photo ID with a photocopy, and travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and evacuation (mandatory, not included). There is no ATM on the trail, so draw cash before the last reliable ATM below.
| Trek | Last reliable ATM | Last stable signal |
|---|---|---|
| Bali Pass | Purola | Sankri (only Jio works consistently) |
| Kedartal | Bhatwari | Gangotri (BSNL, Jio, Airtel) |
| Vasuki Tal | Bhatwari | Gangotri (BSNL, Jio, Airtel) |
| Roopkund | Dewal | Lohajung |
| Pangarchulla Peak | Joshimath (ATMs can run out; withdraw in Rishikesh) | Joshimath (patchy up to Guling) |
| Gaumukh Tapovan | Bhatwari | Gangotri (BSNL, Jio, Airtel) |
| Valley of Flowers | Joshimath | Govind Ghat |
| Dodital–Darwa Pass | Uttarkashi | Agoda (only Jio works consistently) |
Water and ice need planning on four of them. Natural water is scarce on Kedartal's last climb to the lake, so fill each bottle at camp. There is no water on Pangarchulla's summit route, and ordinary bottles can freeze, so carry an insulated one. On Vasuki Tal, fill every bottle at Nandanvan, and expect icy patches on the descent; on Gaumukh Tapovan you can still meet snow or ice near the Gaumukh glacier.
Highest treks for a first-timer
For the most height on a first Himalayan trek, pick Valley of Flowers in summer: up to 4,329 m at Hemkund Sahib, July to September, minimum age 9. In winter, Chopta Chandrashila (3,962 m, October to June, minimum age 8) is the highest summit on this list; its page says fit beginners can do it and that January to March is the coldest and most demanding time. Kuari Pass (3,815 m) and Kedarkantha (3,810 m) are both graded Easy–Moderate and take children from 8 years.
In spring and autumn, Surya Top (3,932 m) is graded Moderate, and Ranthan Kharak (3,928 m) is graded Moderate with a Difficult summit day of about 10 km and 11 to 12 hours. Both pages say fit beginners who train properly can do them.
How altitude changes the plan
The Uttarakhand Health Department's Char Dham health advisory for travel above 3,000 m asks for no more than 800 to 1,000 m of elevation gain a day, 5 to 10 minutes' rest for each hour of trekking, and descending if you feel unwell. Compare the pace on two treks: Vasuki Tal reaches 4,880 m on Day 6 of 9, while Kedarkantha reaches 3,810 m on Day 4 of 5.
Trekkaro tip: build up. Do a 3,800 m trek such as Kedarkantha or Kuari Pass first, then a 4,000 m+ route, and only then Bali Pass, which asks for a trek above 4,000 m before it.
What the highest treks cost
- Trek fees: from ₹7,500 + 5% GST (Valley of Flowers) to ₹28,500 + 5% GST (Vasuki Tal) among the eight treks above 4,000 m. For the highest of them, the Bali Pass trek page shows EMI from ₹964 a month.
- Gear: Free Trekking Gear (Decathlon trekking shoes, a -10°C jacket, trekking poles, gaiters and microspikes) comes on the other seven treks above 4,000 m against a ₹3,000 refundable deposit and a ₹200 washing charge (+ GST). Valley of Flowers is the exception: it gets free microspikes and gaiters only, with no deposit and no charge.
- Transport is not included in the trek fee: we help the group book shared cabs, paid directly to the driver and split among trekkers. Bali Pass starts from Sankri, with a shared cab from Dehradun at ₹1,000 per person one way. Gangotri treks (Kedartal, Vasuki Tal, Gaumukh Tapovan) cost about ₹8,000 per vehicle, Valley of Flowers ₹7,500 per vehicle, and Roopkund from Lohajung about ₹6,500 per 5–6 seat vehicle one way.
- Cancellation: 70% refund 30 days or more before departure; 50% at 15 to 29 days; no cash refund at 8 to 14 days; nothing at 7 days or less. Up to 8 days before departure you can take a 100% TrekCash voucher (valid 1 year), a free reschedule (once per booking) or a transfer instead of the cash refund.
