This guide is about the Har Ki Dun Trek — dates, price, day-by-day itinerary and booking are on the trek page.
Quick answer: Har Ki Dun is a high valley at 3,536 m (11,600 ft) in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, in the upper Supin River valley inside Govind Pashu Vihar National Park. To reach it, travel to Dehradun, drive about 200 km (8–9 hours) to Sankri (1,950 m / 6,400 ft), drive 12 km more to the trailhead at Taluka, then walk about 27 km over three days via Puani Garaat and Kalkatiyadhaar. The shared cab from Dehradun to Sankri costs ₹1,000 per person each way, paid to the driver.
This page places Har Ki Dun on the map and works out every leg of the journey to it, from Dehradun and Delhi to the valley floor. The figures come from the itinerary and route map on our Har Ki Dun trek page. The day-by-day trek plan is in our Har Ki Dun trek guide.
Where is Har Ki Dun located?
Har Ki Dun is in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand, in Uttarkashi district. It is a glacially carved valley at the upper end of the Supin River, which the trail follows almost the whole way from the road. The valley floor at 3,536 m is ringed on three sides by Swargarohini (6,252 m / 20,512 ft), Bandarpunch (6,316 m / 20,722 ft) and Black Peak (6,387 m / 20,955 ft).
The whole walk is inside a protected area. The Wikipedia article on Govind Pashu Vihar National Park notes that the Har Ki Doon valley lies within the park, in Uttarkashi district, and that the forest rest houses at Taluka and Osla are on the route to it. The forest entry permit is why you carry an original government photo ID; international trekkers need their passport. Each trekker also brings a doctor-signed medical certificate.
Where does the Har Ki Dun trek start?
Two places answer this, and they are 12 km apart:
- Sankri (1,950 m / 6,400 ft) is the base village. You spend the first and last nights of the trip in a Sankri guesthouse, collect your gear and attend the trek briefing.
- Taluka (2,107 m / 6,913 ft) is the trailhead and the last motorable point, about 12 km and 45 minutes by road beyond Sankri. The trail starts at a bridge over the Supin.
When people search for the "Har Ki Dun base camp" they mean Sankri, and that is how our trek page uses the term. The camp closest to the valley is Kalkatiyadhaar (2,740 m / 8,990 ft), above Osla village, where you sleep two nights; on Day 4 you walk about 7 km each way to Har Ki Dun and back, about 14 km in all. The Sankri–Taluka drive on Days 2 and 6 is by shared cab paid directly to the driver; the trek page gives no fare for it, so keep small notes ready.
How far is Har Ki Dun from Dehradun?
Har Ki Dun is about 212 km by road and about 27 km on foot from Dehradun, one way. Leg by leg:
| Leg | Distance | Time | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dehradun to Sankri, via Mussoorie, Purola and Mori | about 200 km by road | 8–9 hrs | 640 m to 1,950 m |
| Sankri to Taluka | about 12 km by road | about 45 min | 1,950 m to 2,107 m |
| Taluka to Puani Garaat | about 10 km on foot | 6–7 hrs | +333 m to 2,440 m |
| Puani Garaat to Kalkatiyadhaar, past Osla | about 10 km on foot | 5–6 hrs | +300 m to 2,740 m |
| Kalkatiyadhaar to Har Ki Dun | about 7 km on foot | 4–5 hrs | +796 m to 3,536 m |
| Dehradun to Har Ki Dun | about 212 km by road + 27 km on foot | 1 driving day + 3 walking days | about 2,900 m above Dehradun |
The way back is shorter on foot, about 25 km (7 km back to Kalkatiyadhaar, 10 km to Puani Garaat, 8 km to Taluka), which makes the trek 52 km in all. The last 7 km into the valley gains more height than the two days before it combined, so Day 4, about 14 km and 8–9 hours as a round trip, is the longest day.
How far is Osla from Har Ki Dun?
Osla is the last village on the route. You pass it on Day 3 between Puani Garaat and Kalkatiyadhaar, and the route map places the Kalkatiyadhaar camp above it. From Osla it is therefore the rest of the Day 3 walk up to camp and then about 7 km to the valley. The trek page does not give the Osla to Kalkatiyadhaar part of the Day 3 walk, so we cannot give one figure: it is that part plus about 7 km.
How do you get to Dehradun?
Dehradun is the gateway, and Dehradun Railway Station (DDN) is where the shared cab picks you up at 6:30 AM on Day 1. Reach it the evening before, or by an overnight service from Delhi.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, about 25 km from the city and listed by the Airports Authority of India as Dehradun Airport. A morning flight on Day 1 does not leave time to reach the station, so plan a night in Dehradun; it is not part of the trek fee. Har Ki Dun shares its base village with Kedarkantha, and our guide to reaching Sankri covers the Delhi–Dehradun options step by step.
