Quick answer: Agoda is a village at 2,250 m (7,382 ft) in the Assi Ganga valley of Uttarkashi district, 185 km and 8 to 9 hours by road from Dehradun. It is the road head of the Dodital Darwa Pass trek: you sleep there on Day 1 and Day 5, and only Jio gives a steady mobile signal.

Agoda is the last village on the road before the forest trail to Dodital lake. Trekkers spend two nights there on Trekkaro's Dodital Darwa Pass trek, one before the walk and one after it, so it is worth knowing what the village has and what it lacks. You will also see the name spelt "Agora", which is how the Uttarkashi district administration writes it. This guide covers where Agoda is, how the road gets there, where you stay, what works and what does not, and how the two nights fit into the trek. For the lake itself, see the Dodital lake guide.

Where is Agoda village, and how high is it?

Agoda is a small village at 2,250 m (7,382 ft) in the valley of the Assi Ganga in Uttarkashi district of the Garhwal Himalaya. The Assi Ganga is the river that rises at Dodital lake and joins the Bhagirathi at Gangori.

The village is the bottom of the climb to the lake. From Agoda the trail rises to Manjhi at 2,700 m, then to Dodital at 3,050 m, 11 km on foot over two days, and on Day 4 over Darwa Pass to Darwa Top (4,150 m). That is a gain of 1,900 m from the village to the highest point of the trek.

How do you get to Agoda from Dehradun?

The road runs from Dehradun to Uttarkashi, then up the Assi Ganga valley through Sangamchatti to Agoda. The shared cab covers the 185 km in 8 to 9 hours.

The Uttarkashi district page describes the walking approach: the trail to Dodital begins at Sangamchatti, and Agora, 6 km up the trail, is one of the overnight options, with Bebra at 8 km the other. On the Dodital Darwa Pass trek the cab drives all the way to Agoda, so the walk starts at the village itself.

On Day 1 the cab leaves Dehradun Railway Station in the morning, and on Day 6 it leaves Agoda early and reaches Dehradun in the evening.

Where do you stay in Agoda?

On both Agoda nights Trekkaro puts the group in a guesthouse or homestay in the village, in triple or quad sharing, with dinner served there. Both nights are part of the trek fee. The Uttarkashi district page also lists private lodges in the village.

This is the last night under a roof before three nights on the trail: one at Manjhi and two in tents by Dodital lake. Use the Agoda evening to sort your backpack, because the walk to Manjhi starts after breakfast on Day 2.

Is there mobile network and an ATM in Agoda?

Agoda is the last place on the trek with a steady mobile signal, and only Jio works there consistently. Once you leave the village there is no signal on the trail, and the trek team keeps in touch by radio. If you are not on Jio, tell your family before the trek that you may be out of reach from the evening of Day 1 until the drive back on Day 6.

There is no ATM in Agoda or on the trail. Uttarkashi is the last reliable ATM on the way, so draw the cash you need there, including your share of the cab fare.

Do you carry your own backpack from Agoda?

Yes, unless you book backpack offloading, an optional add-on for the whole trek. From Agoda you carry your backpack to Manjhi, Dodital and Darwa Top and back, so pack only what the trek needs and sort your bag in the Agoda guesthouse the evening before.

What happens in Agoda on the trek?

Agoda is where the trek begins and ends, and the group is there on four of the six days.

DayWhat happens in Agoda
Day 1Arrival from Dehradun after the long drive, dinner and the night in the guesthouse or homestay
Day 2Breakfast, then the 6 km walk out of the village to the Manjhi camp
Day 5The walk back down from Dodital and a second night in Agoda
Day 6An early departure by cab for Dehradun

From Darwa Top a route also continues over the pass and down to Hanumanchatti in the Yamuna valley, as the district page notes. Trekkaro's trek does not cross that way; it returns from Darwa Top to the lake and back down to Agoda.

When can you trek from Agoda?

Trekkaro runs the Dodital Darwa Pass trek from October to June. From December to March the forest on the trail is under snow and Dodital lake partly freezes; in December and January days run from -2°C to 5°C and nights from -12°C to -5°C on the trek. April to June brings days of 8°C to 15°C and nights of 0°C to 7°C.

What does the trek from Agoda cost?

The Dodital Darwa Pass trek fee is ₹10,500 per person plus 5% GST (₹11,025 with GST), Agoda to Agoda. EMI starts at ₹540 a month. It covers the two Agoda guesthouse or homestay nights, tents on Days 2 to 4, pure vegetarian meals from Day 1 dinner to Day 5 dinner, and all permits and forest camping fees. Trekkaro's Free Trekking Gear on this trek covers Decathlon trekking shoes, a -10°C jacket, trekking poles, gaiters and microspikes, against a ₹3,000 refundable deposit and a ₹200 washing charge.

The drive from Dehradun to Agoda and back is not in the fee. Trekkaro helps the group book shared cabs at ₹6,500 per 5 to 6 seat vehicle one way, paid directly to the driver and split among the trekkers in it, which comes to ₹1,083 each with six people. Travel insurance is compulsory and bought separately. Carry an original government photo ID and a photocopy.
