Chadar Trek – Walking on the Frozen Zanskar River

The Chadar Trek in Ladakh is one of the most extraordinary trekking experiences in the Himalayas, offering the chance to walk on the frozen Zanskar River at an altitude of 11,150 feet. Known for its surreal beauty and extreme conditions, the trek is often compared to a journey through the Arctic. With temperatures dropping as low as -30°C, the Chadar Trek is both a challenge and an unforgettable adventure.

Spanning nearly 62 km in 9 days, this is one of the longest and most demanding treks in India. Trekkers traverse over thick sheets of ice while surrounded by towering cliffs, frozen waterfalls, and stunning snow-covered landscapes. Along the way, you may spot rare Himalayan wildlife such as blue sheep, ibex, and even the elusive snow leopard, making the journey even more rewarding.

The trek begins from Magnetic Hill near Leh, taking adventurers through a frozen wonderland of natural marvels. The highlight is walking on the “Chadar,” which means blanket, representing the thick sheet of ice covering the river. Every step offers breathtaking views and the thrill of walking across shifting ice formations, testing your balance and endurance.

Despite its challenges, the Chadar Trek is considered a dream for trekkers worldwide. The sense of achievement, combined with the raw beauty of the Himalayas, makes this expedition an experience of a lifetime.

Best Time to Visit Chadar Trek:

The ideal season for the Chadar Trek is mid-January to mid-February, when the Zanskar River is completely frozen. During this window, trekkers witness the most spectacular icy landscapes and can safely traverse the frozen riverbed.

The Chadar Trek is not just a trek—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that combines extreme thrill, natural beauty, and Himalayan wilderness in its purest form.

  • πŸ₯Ύ Trek Distance: 14 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 6-7 hours · πŸ—» Altitude Gain: ⬇️ ~150 m (~450 ft)

The trek from Tsomo Paldar to Tibb Cave is one of the most scenic stretches of the Chadar Trek. Beginning at 10,500 ft, the trail gradually ascends to 10,950 ft over 14 km, making it a long but manageable day without sudden altitude challenges. Trekkers walk alongside the mighty Zanskar River, where the shimmering emerald-green water contrasts beautifully against the frozen landscape. Along the way, you’ll encounter frozen waterfalls that seem to hang magically in time, their origins unknown and often surrounded by fascinating local legends.

A particularly unique highlight is the waterfall that never freezes, even in sub-zero temperatures, a mystery that continues to amaze both trekkers and locals alike. The path also reveals small caves where local porters traditionally rest, giving you a glimpse into their rugged lifestyle. The trek can feel challenging, especially with gumboots on slippery surfaces, but the breathtaking views make every step worth it.

Day 6: Tibb Cave (3,350 m / 10,950 ft) to Nerak (3,400 m / 11,100 ft); 13 Km, 6-7 hrs

πŸ”†  Highlights of the day:

  • Iconic Frozen Nerak Waterfall β„️
  • Hot Lunch en route 🍲
  • First village of Zanskar (Nerak) 🏑
  • Coldest campsite of the trek (–30°C) 🌑️
  • πŸ₯Ύ Trek Distance: 13 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 6–7 hours · πŸ—» Altitude Gain: ⬆️ ~365 m (~1,200 ft)

The trail from Tibb Cave to Nerak is often considered the most awaited part of the Chadar Trek. Covering 13 km, this day brings you face-to-face with the trek’s most iconic attraction — the frozen Nerak waterfall. A true natural wonder, this towering cascade is completely frozen into an icy sculpture, drawing trekkers from around the globe.

Walking alongside the frozen Zanskar River, you’ll pass through deep gorges, tall cliffs, and surreal landscapes that feel almost otherworldly. Midway, you’ll stop for a hot lunch break, refueling before continuing toward Nerak. This campsite is also significant as it is the first village in the Zanskar region, giving a glimpse of life in this remote, frozen valley. If time permits, a short visit to Nerak village can be arranged.

Be prepared — Nerak is the coldest campsite of the trek, where night temperatures can plummet to -30°C. Proper layering, insulated gloves, woolen caps, and thermals are essential to endure the freezing night.

The day ends with trekkers settling into their triple-sharing tents, braving the icy wilderness, yet rewarded with the unforgettable sight of one of nature’s greatest frozen masterpieces.

  • πŸ₯Ύ Trek Distance: 13 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 5-6 hours · πŸ—» Altitude Loss: ⬆️ ~365 m (~1,200 ft)

The journey from Nerak to Tibb Cave marks the beginning of the return leg of the Chadar trek, yet it remains equally thrilling and memorable. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Chadar is its unpredictability. The icy trail trekkers crossed on the way up may look completely different on the return — some sections may have cracked or vanished, while new layers of ice form overnight. This constant transformation adds to both the challenge and charm of the trek.

Walking along the frozen Zanskar River once again, trekkers are rewarded with stunning sights of snow-covered cliffs, emerald-green water flowing beneath the ice, and frozen waterfalls hanging like glass sculptures. Along the way, you’ll bid farewell to friendly locals and fellow porters, creating a deep cultural connection with the Zanskar valley.

A hot lunch break en route offers warmth and energy in the freezing conditions, giving you a chance to rest before continuing the day’s journey. Despite the fatigue, this stretch is filled with nostalgia as you retrace your steps and reflect on the hardships and beauty of the previous days.

By evening, you’ll reach Tibb Cave campsite (10,950 ft), where you’ll spend your final night in tents under the crisp Himalayan sky. It’s a moment to cherish — the silence of the valley, the glow of the stars, and the satisfaction of walking one of the most iconic trails in the world.

  • Scenic drive via Indus–Zanskar confluence πŸš—
  • Stay in hotel | centrally heated | running hot water 🏨
  • πŸ₯Ύ Trek Distance: 17 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 7–8 hours · πŸ—» Altitude Loss: ⬇️ ~200 m (~656 ft) · πŸš— Drive: 75 km, 3–4 hours

The final day of the Chadar Trek begins early in the morning with a sense of accomplishment and nostalgia. Though the trail may feel familiar, it’s never quite the same. The Chadar ice sheet constantly changes with temperature fluctuations, meaning that once firm sections may now be fragile, while rocks and emerald-green waters of the Zanskar emerge in new forms. This ever-changing landscape is a reminder of the raw power and beauty of nature.

The trek back to Shingra Koma offers one last chance to soak in the frozen wilderness, admire the sheer cliffs, and capture a few final memories of the icy wonderland. Despite being a return journey, trekkers often find the landscape to be entirely different and equally mesmerizing.

A hot lunch is served en route, providing comfort against the biting cold. From Shingra Koma, vehicles await to take you on a scenic 70 km drive back to Leh, retracing the stunning route through the confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers, Magnetic Hill, and Pathar Sahib Gurudwara.

By evening, you’ll reach your hotel in Leh (11,500 ft), where warmth, hot showers, and the luxury of a centrally heated room await. After days in tents and sub-zero nights, this comfort feels like pure bliss. It’s the perfect setting to reflect on the journey, celebrate the adventure, and cherish the unforgettable memories of walking on the frozen Zanskar.

Day 9: Depart from Trekkaro Leh Hotel

After completing your trek in Ladakh, you can extend your journey by exploring some of the region’s highlights. Visit the historic Leh Palace, admire panoramic views from the Shanti Stupa, or take a scenic trip to the serene Pangong Lake. Don’t miss the chance to savor authentic Ladakhi cuisine and immerse yourself in the unique local culture that makes Ladakh so unforgettable. On the day of departure, cab service from Trekkaro’s Leh Hotel to Leh Airport can be arranged at an additional cost. Please note that the hotel check-out time is 10:00 AM.

The most convenient way to reach Leh is by air, with Kushok Bakula Rimpochi Airport (IXL) being the nearest airport, located just 4 km from the main city. The airport is well connected to major Indian cities, including Delhi, Srinagar, Jammu, Chandigarh, and Mumbai, making it easily accessible for both domestic and international travelers. International trekkers can also fly into Delhi and take a direct connecting flight to Leh for a smooth journey.

Once you arrive at Leh Airport, you won’t have to worry about the next steps. Trekkaro takes complete responsibility for all your onward arrangements, ensuring a seamless and hassle-free experience. Whether it’s booking transportation to your accommodation, coordinating transfers to the trek base, or planning your next outdoor adventure, our expert team will be by your side.

With local expertise and a trusted network of partners, Trekkaro guarantees smooth logistics and personalized guidance, so you can focus entirely on your trekking adventure. From airport pick-up to trek planning, everything is taken care of. With Trekkaro, your journey to Leh and beyond is not just convenient but also stress-free, giving you the confidence to embark on the unforgettable Chadar Trek experience.

There are no direct or indirect train services to Leh. The nearest railway stations are Jammu Tawi, Chandigarh, and Pathankot, but all require a long road journey, which isn’t possible in winter due to highway closures.

During winter, traveling to Leh by road is not possible as both the Manali–Leh Highway and the Srinagar–Leh Highway remain closed due to heavy snowfall. These high-altitude routes, which connect Leh to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, usually shut down by October or November each year when snow begins to accumulate in the region. The closure continues until late April or early May, depending on weather conditions.

This seasonal roadblock results in the complete isolation of Leh from the rest of India by land routes during winter. Hence, the only feasible and reliable option to reach Leh in winter is by air via Kushok Bakula Rimpochi Airport, which remains operational year-round and connects Leh to major Indian cities like Delhi, Srinagar, and Chandigarh.

As per the new regulations for the Chadar Trek, trekkers are required to spend at least two days in Leh (11,500 ft.)before beginning the trek. Strict adherence to this rule ensures safety while preparing for the adventure ahead.

A short sightseeing tour (included in the cost) will take you to some of Leh’s iconic landmarks such as the Hall of Fame, Shey Monastery, and the magnificent Thiksey Monastery. In the afternoon, complete the insurance formalities required before starting the expedition. The results of today’s check-up determine whether you are medically fit to proceed with the trek. Once the formalities are done, you can relax and spend your evening strolling around Leh, enjoying the crisp mountain air.

Accommodation will be in a centrally heated hotel, with an attached washroom and hot water in buckets to ensure a comfortable stay.

Walking on the thin sheet of ice can be tricky, especially in gumboots, but with patience, you’ll learn to identify fragile and firm surfaces.

  • Hot lunch on the way 🍲
  • Scenic drive via Indus–Zanskar confluence πŸš—

🍲 Meals: Lunch
πŸ›οΈ Stay: Hotel (on a twin or triple sharing basis)

How To Reach

    • Shoes (worth Rs. 6,999)

    • Insulated Jackets (-10° C) (worth Rs. 3,299)

We are always prepared for unpredictable mountain weather — and encourage trekkers to share any safety concerns with our team for quick support.

    2. Health Monitoring: Daily Oxygen & Pulse Checks

Your well-being is our priority. For high-altitude treks, we conduct daily oxygen saturation and pulse monitoring (as needed) before and during the trek.

    This proactive step helps us:
