Bali Pass Trek – The Ultimate High-Altitude Adventure

The Bali Pass Trek is one of the most thrilling and demanding high-altitude expeditions in the Indian Himalayas. At a staggering elevation of 16,240 ft., this adventurous trail connects the sacred Yamunotri Valley with the enchanting Har Ki Dun Valley, offering trekkers a rare experience of traversing between two legendary valleys.

This trek is recommended only for experienced trekkers, as it involves rugged terrain, steep ascents, sharp descents, and narrow ridge walks. The journey begins at the quaint mountain village of Sankri in Uttarakhand and concludes at Janki Chatti, weaving together spirituality, raw adventure, and breathtaking scenery.

Along the route, trekkers pass through the alpine meadows of Dev Thach, the mystical Ruinsara forest, and the sacred Ruinsara Lake, which is deeply connected with Mahabharata mythology. The trail gradually transforms from lush green valleys into high-altitude snowfields and moraine, building up to the exhilarating Bali Pass crossing.

From the summit, trekkers are rewarded with unforgettable 360° views of the mighty Himalayan giants — Bandarpoonch, Kalanag, and Swargarohini peaks.

Considered one of the most unexplored and offbeat trails in the Indian Himalayas, the Bali Pass Trek is the perfect choice for adventurers seeking solitude, untouched Himalayan beauty, and a true test of endurance.

Best Time to Visit:

The best months for the Bali Pass Trek are:

  • Summer: May – June (pleasant weather, clear views, blooming meadows)
  • Autumn: September – October (crisp skies, stable weather, snow-dusted peaks)

Note: Due to extreme weather and trail conditions, the trek is not recommended during the monsoon or peak winter.

The trail today is demanding, with steep ascents over rocky moraine and loose scree. As you gain altitude, vegetation thins out, replaced by barren, rugged terrain. The surroundings grow more dramatic, with the snowline approaching and towering peaks dominating the skyline.

By afternoon, reach the Bali Pass Base Camp, located at the foot of the mighty pass. The campsite offers breathtaking views of the Swargarohini massif, Kalanag, and Bandarpoonch, and the sharp ridgeline of Bali Pass looms ahead, promising an adventurous crossing the next day.

From Janki Chatti, board a shared vehicle arranged by Trekkaro for the long, scenic drive back to Dehradun. The journey winds through charming hill towns, river valleys, and pine-covered slopes.

💡 Tip: Start pre-dawn (around 4:00–5:00 AM) for safe snow conditions and to cross the pass before the weather turns.

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. Begin with a steep climb over snow slopes and rocky ridges to reach the Bali Pass summit at 4,950 m. The ridge is narrow and requires careful footing, but the reward is extraordinary — stunning 360° views of the Swargarohini peaks, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag, with vast valleys stretching below.

After celebrating the summit, begin a long and steep descent on scree and snow patches, gradually re-entering alpine meadows and forested zones. By evening, reach Lower Dhamni, a comfortable forest campsite, where you can finally rest after the adrenaline-filled day.

After breakfast, begin the final descent from Lower Dhamni through dense oak and pine forests. The well-marked trail leads you to the pilgrimage town of Janki Chatti, famous as the base for the Yamunotri Temple trek.

From Janki Chatti, board a shared vehicle arranged by Trekkaro for the long, scenic drive back to Dehradun. The journey winds through charming hill towns, river valleys, and pine-covered slopes.

By late evening, reach Dehradun, where the trek officially concludes. A moment to celebrate new friendships, unforgettable memories, and the pride of conquering the Bali Pass (16,240 ft).

At Trekkaro, we redefine the trekking experience with our Free Trekking Gear (FTG) initiative — a game-changer in the adventure travel industry. We equip our trekkers with top-tier trekking gear at zero additional cost, including premium Decathlon products like:

• Shoes (worth Rs. 6,999)

• Insulated Jackets (-10° C) (worth Rs. 3,299)

• Trekking Poles (worth Rs. 1,299)

This ensures every adventurer, whether first-time or experienced, can enjoy the mountains without the financial burden of buying expensive gear. It's trekking made accessible, safe, and seamless.

1. Gear Built for the Mountains

Our high-performance tents and sleeping bags are engineered for extreme alpine conditions.

• Sleeping Bags: Designed to endure temperatures as low as -5°C to -20°C

• Tents: Provide additional insulation and wind protection for a warm, secure rest each night

We are always prepared for unpredictable mountain weather — and encourage trekkers to share any safety concerns with our team for quick support.

2. Health Monitoring: Daily Oxygen & Pulse Checks

Your well-being is our priority. For high-altitude treks, we conduct daily oxygen saturation and pulse monitoring (as needed) before and during the trek.

This proactive step helps us:

• Detect early signs of altitude sickness

• Make informed decisions for your safety

• Ensure every trekker remains fit and comfortable throughout the journey

3. Emergency Support & Medical Backup

  • Oxygen Cylinders & Medical Kit:

Altitude affects everyone differently. Our guides are equipped with portable oxygen cylinders and essential first-aid medicines for immediate use in case of altitude-related symptoms.

Tip for trekkers: Stay physically prepared — activities like running, cycling, and swimming greatly improve endurance at high altitudes.

  • Stretchers at Every Campsite:

In case of emergencies or injuries, stretchers are available at all campsites, ensuring a safe and swift evacuation to base camp for further care.

  • Radio Communication Across Camps:

Cell networks can be unreliable in the mountains. To bridge the gap, our camps and guides stay connected via a dedicated radio communication system, ensuring quick response in cases of bad weather, missing items, or medical needs.

4. Technical Support on Snowy Slopes

For treks involving snow-covered or technically challenging terrain, our trained technical team is deployed to assist. They ensure:

• Proper route safety

• Emergency handling

• Support in difficult sections like icy slopes or narrow ridgelines

With Trekkaro, you’re always in safe and experienced hands — so you can focus on what truly matters: the adventure of a lifetime.

• Last ATM – Purola

Purola is the last reliable ATM stop before reaching Sankri (Basecamp). Make sure to withdraw sufficient cash here, as you may not find functional ATMs beyond this point.

• Mobile Network – Sankri

Sankri is the last location with a stable mobile signal, and even here, only Jio works consistently. Please complete all important calls and inform your family about limited connectivity during the trek. Once you leave Sankri, mobile signals are generally unavailable.
