Roopkund Lake Trek – The Mysterious Lake of Skeletons

Nestled high in the Garhwal Himalayas, Roopkund Lake (15,750 ft) has gained immense popularity among trekkers for its breathtaking landscapes, spiritual aura, and mysterious charm. This glacial lake is famously known as the “Skeleton Lake” because hundreds of ancient human skeletons were discovered at its bottom—sparking legends and scientific curiosity alike.

Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Trishul (7,120 m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,310 m), the lake offers a surreal experience where natural beauty meets timeless mystery. Though small in size for most of the year, Roopkund expands during the monsoon as melting glaciers feed into it.

What to Expect on the Trek:

A well-crafted Roopkund trek itinerary should include:

  • Dense forests of oak and rhododendron, alive with birdsong and crisp mountain air
  • Snow-covered meadows and ridges leading to panoramic views of the Garhwal range
  • Sparkling streams and waterfalls, perfect for refreshing breaks
  • Camping in high-altitude bugyals (meadows) such as Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal
  • The final steep climb to the mystical lake itself, with sweeping vistas of Himalayan giants

Trekkers come with varied motives—some driven by the desire to unravel the mystery of the skeletal remains, others to immerse themselves in the pristine wilderness, and many to simply experience the divinity and wonder that the Himalayas bestow at Roopkund.

Best Time to Visit:

  • May–June: Spring-summer window with blooming rhododendrons, pleasant trekking conditions, and patches of snow.
  • September–October: Clear skies, breathtaking mountain views, and more snow near the lake.

Avoid trekking after October: Intense cold, strong winds, and heavy snowfall make the region unsafe, especially for solo trekkers.

Why Roopkund?

Because every step of this journey is a blend of natural grandeur, ancient mystery, and Himalayan spirituality. Whether you’re chasing adventure, history, or peace of mind, Roopkund promises an unforgettable lifetime experience.

🍲 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks, Dinner

Day 3: Ghairoli Patal (3,050 m / 10,000 ft) to Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft)

🔆 Highlights of the day:

  • Begin the day with a gradual ascent from the forest clearing of Ghairoli Patal
  • Trek through the sweeping alpine meadows of Ali Bugyal (3,350 m / 11,000 ft) and Bedni Bugyal (3,550 m / 11,650 ft), among the most beautiful in the Himalayas
  • Spectacular views of Mt. Trishul (7,120 m / 23,360 ft) and Nanda Ghunti (6,310 m / 20,700 ft)
  • Pause at Bedni Kund (3,600 m / 11,800 ft), a small sacred high-altitude lake
  • Notice the landscape shift from lush meadows to rocky, alpine terrain
  • Reach Pathar Nachauni, a windswept campsite below steep ridges
  • 🥾 Trek Distance: 9 km | ⏱️ Trek Duration: 6–7 hours | 🗻 Altitude Gain: ⬆️ ~820 m (~2,700 ft)

💡 Tip: This is your first campsite above 3,800 m (12,000 ft). Walk slowly, keep your breathing steady, and drink water frequently to aid acclimatization.

Leaving the quiet forested glade of Ghairoli Patal (3,050 m / 10,000 ft), the trail opens up dramatically into rolling grasslands. A steady climb brings you to the expansive Ali Bugyal (3,350 m / 11,000 ft), where the meadows stretch endlessly under the wide Himalayan sky. This is one of the trek’s most scenic stretches, with herds of horses and sheep grazing freely.

From here, the trail gradually ascends to Bedni Bugyal (3,550 m / 11,650 ft), another picturesque meadow dotted with wildflowers in season. A short detour leads to Bedni Kund (3,600 m / 11,800 ft), a sacred lake with deep mythological roots, often used for rituals during the Nanda Devi Raj Jat festival.

After Bedni, the terrain shifts as you climb toward higher altitude. The lush greenery gives way to alpine scrub and rocky slopes, and the air grows thinner and colder. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft)—a stark but striking campsite, often buffeted by mountain winds and surrounded by towering ridges.

🏕 Stay: Tent (3 trekkers per tent)

Day 4: Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft) to Bhagwabasa (4,300 m / 14,100 ft) via Kalu Vinayak

🔆 Highlights of the day:

  • A short but steep high-altitude climb, one of the most challenging sections of the Roopkund trek
  • Ascend to the revered Kalu Vinayak temple (4,200 m / 13,800 ft), perched on a rocky ridge with panoramic views
  • Stunning vistas of Trishul (7,120 m / 23,360 ft), Nanda Ghunti (6,310 m / 20,700 ft), and the Chaukhamba ranges
  • Sharp transition from grassy meadows to rocky, alpine landscapes with sparse vegetation
  • Reach Bhagwabasa campsite, set amidst boulder fields, often snow-covered in early season
  • 🥾Trek Distance: 4 km | ⏱️ Trek Duration: 4–5 hours (short distance but steep climb and thin air) | 🗻 Altitude Gain: ⬆️ ~430 m (~1,400 ft)

💡 Tip: This stretch demands patience—walk slowly, breathe deeply, and rest frequently. The high altitude makes the short distance feel far tougher than it did in earlier days.

From Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft), the trail immediately begins a steep zig-zag climb up a rocky ridge. This is a strenuous ascent at high altitude, where trekkers often take frequent halts to catch their breath. After about 2 km of steady climbing, you’ll reach the Kalu Vinayak temple (4,200 m / 13,800 ft)—a black stone shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

The location of the temple is awe-inspiring, offering 360° panoramic views of Himalayan giants like Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, and Neelkanth. Many trekkers pause here not just for rest but also for a quiet moment of reverence before the summit approach.

From Kalu Vinayak, the trail gradually descends over boulders and rocky slopes before leveling out toward Bhagwabasa (4,300 m / 14,100 ft). The campsite sits in a stark, high-altitude environment of loose rocks and snow patches, especially in the pre-monsoon season.

Evenings at Bhagwabasa are often cold and windy, but the atmosphere is filled with anticipation as this is the last camp before the final push to Roopkund Lake.

🏕 Stay: Tent (3 trekkers per tent)
🍲 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks, Dinner

Day 5: Bhagwabasa (4,300 m / 14,100 ft) to Roopkund (4,800 m / 15,750 ft) to Junargali (4,880 m / 16,000 ft) & Return to Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft) via Bhagwabasa

🔆 Highlights of the day:

  • Summit push to the legendary Roopkund Lake (4,800 m / 15,750 ft), famous for its skeletal remains and glacial beauty
  • Optional side trek to Junargali (4,880 m / 16,000 ft) for panoramic Himalayan vistas
  • Spectacular views of Trishul (7,120 m / 23,360 ft), Nanda Ghunti (6,310 m / 20,700 ft), and the Chaukhamba ranges
  • Walk across rocky alpine terrain, glacial moraines, and snow patches
  • Return descent to Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft) via Bhagwabasa, completing a full high-altitude loop
  • 🥾Trek Distance: 12 km | ⏱️ Trek Duration: 9 hours | 🗻 Altitude Gain: ⬆️ ~480 m (~1,575 ft) to Roopkund; optional +80 m (~250 ft) to Junargali | 🗻 Altitude Loss: ⬇️ ~930 m (~3,050 ft) on the return to Pathar Nachauni

💡 Tip: Start very early (around 4–5 AM) to avoid strong afternoon winds, reduce sun exposure, and allow time for acclimatization at the summit.

Today is the most thrilling and challenging day of the Roopkund trek. Starting very early from Bhagwabasa (4,300 m / 14,100 ft), trekkers begin a steep ascent across rocky terrain and occasional snow patches, using trekking poles for stability. After 2–3 hours of steady climbing, you reach the iconic Roopkund Lake (4,800 m / 15,750 ft), a small glacial lake encircled by towering Himalayan peaks, famously known for the ancient skeletal remains lying in its waters. Trekkers can spend time exploring, photographing, and soaking in the surreal beauty of the lake. For those seeking a higher vantage point, a short side trek leads to Junargali (4,880 m / 16,000 ft), offering panoramic views of peaks such as Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and the surrounding glacier-fed valleys. After enjoying the summit, the descent begins via the same route, stopping briefly at Bhagwabasa (4,300 m / 14,100 ft) for rest and lunch, before continuing downhill to Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft) for the night. This 12 km trek covers a cumulative ascent of ~480 m (~1,575 ft) to Roopkund, with an optional +80 m (~250 ft) to Junargali, and a total descent of ~930 m (~3,050 ft) on the return. Trekking poles, layered clothing, hydration, and energy snacks are essential, as the high-altitude environment is cold, windy, and physically demanding, but the breathtaking scenery and the mystical lake make every step worthwhile.

🏕 Stay: Tent (3 trekkers per tent)
🍲 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks, Dinner

Day 6: Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft) to Wan (2,440 m / 8,000 ft) via Bedni Bugyal (3,550 m / 11,650 ft) & Drive to Lohajung (1,700 m / 5,577 ft)

  • Begin the descent from Pathar Nachauni, passing once more through the lush alpine meadows of Bedni Bugyal
  • Enjoy final panoramic views of Trishul (7,120 m / 23,360 ft), Nanda Ghunti (6,310 m / 20,700 ft), and surrounding peaks
  • Traverse rolling meadows, rocky slopes, and shaded forest trails as the altitude gradually decreases
  • Reach Wan village (2,440 m / 8,000 ft), the starting point of the trek
  • Short drive from Wan to Lohajung (1,700 m / 5,577 ft), a quiet town marking the end of the expedition
  • 🥾 Trek Distance: 16 km | ⏱️ Trek Duration: 5–6 hours | 🗻 Altitude Loss: ⬇️ ~1,430 m (~4,700 ft) from Pathar Nachauni to Wan | 🛣️ Drive Distance: 15 km | ⏱️ Drive Duration: 1 hr drive

💡 Tip: Use trekking poles to protect your knees during the long descent. Take breaks at Bedni Bugyal for photos and to enjoy the last moments of the alpine meadows.

The trek begins with a gradual descent from Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft), passing through the scenic Bedni Bugyal (3,550 m / 11,650 ft) meadows. Here, trekkers can pause to enjoy sweeping views of the Himalayan peaks one last time, capturing photographs of the stunning valleys and glaciers. The trail then continues downhill through rocky paths, ridges, and forested areas, with the vegetation becoming denser as the altitude decreases. By late afternoon, you arrive at Wan village (2,440 m / 8,000 ft), where the trek officially ends. From here, a short drive takes you to Lohajung (1,700 m / 5,577 ft), a peaceful settlement surrounded by lush valleys. Q1. What is the best time to do the Roopkund trek?
A1. The ideal months are May–June and September–October. During these months, the weather is relatively stable, trails are clear of heavy snow, and temperatures are moderate. Avoid trekking after October, as heavy snowfall, strong winds, and extreme cold make the trail dangerous.
Q2. What is the difficulty level of the Roopkund trek?
A2. The trek is considered moderate to difficult. Key challenges include high-altitude trekking, steep ascents (e.g., Pathar Nachauni ? Bhagwabasa ? Roopkund), and rocky or slippery terrain. Physical fitness, stamina, and prior trekking experience are recommended.
Q3. What is the total distance and duration of the trek?
A3. The full trek from Wan ? Ghairoli Patal ? Pathar Nachauni ? Bhagwabasa ? Roopkund ? Junargali ? Return ? Lohajung spans 60–65 km over 7-8 days, depending on the route and acclimatization stops. Daily treks range from 4 km to 16 km, with durations of 4–9 hours.
Q4. What are the altitude ranges?
A4. Wan village: 8,000 ft / 2,440 m | Ghairoli Patal: 10,515 ft / 3,205 m | Pathar Nachauni: 12,700 ft / 3,870 m | Bhagwabasa: 14,100 ft / 4,300 m | Roopkund Lake: 15,750 ft / 4,800 m | Junargali (optional): 16,000 ft / 4,880 m. Altitude gain is gradual but significant, so proper acclimatization is essential.
Q5. How should I acclimatize for the trek?
A5. Spend the first night at Ghairoli Patal (10,515 ft / 3,205 m) to allow your body to adjust. Walk slowly, take short breaks, and drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol or heavy meals at high altitudes. If you experience headaches, nausea, or dizziness, inform your guide and consider resting or descending.
Q6. What kind of fitness is required?
A6. Moderate to good physical fitness is recommended. Daily treks include steep climbs, rocky terrain, and walking 6–12 km at high altitude. Cardiovascular stamina and leg strength will help.
Q7. What type of terrain should I expect?
A7. Dense oak and rhododendron forests (Wan ? Ghairoli Patal) | Alpine meadows (Ali Bugyal, Bedni Bugyal) | Rocky and boulder-strewn paths (Pathar Nachauni ? Bhagwabasa ? Roopkund) | Glacial lake surroundings at Roopkund. Occasional snow patches, especially in early or late season
Q8. What kind of accommodation is available?
A8. Trekking days are mostly spent camping in tents at high-altitude campsites (Ghairoli Patal, Pathar Nachauni, Bhagwabasa). At base and end points (Lohajung), guesthouses or homestays are available.
Q9. What food is provided during the trek?
A9. Typically, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided. Meals are mostly simple, high-energy, and vegetarian-friendly. Carry energy bars, dry fruits, or chocolate for snacks during trekking.
Q10. What clothing and gear should I carry?
A10. Essential: Trekking shoes, warm jacket, fleece, thermal wear, gloves, hat, sunglasses, raincoat. Optional but useful: Trekking poles, gaiters, sunscreen, lip balm, water bottle, camera.

A11. Solo trekking is not recommended, especially at high altitudes and remote sections. Group treks or guided tours ensure safety and logistics support.
Q12. Can children or elderly people do the trek?
A12. Due to high altitude and strenuous terrain, it is not recommended for children under 12 or elderly people with health issues.
Q13. How should I prepare physically?
A13. Cardio training: Running, cycling, or swimming | Strength training: Squats, lunges, leg exercises | Endurance: Practice multi-hour hikes with a backpack | Acclimatization practice: If possible, do short treks at moderate altitudes beforehand
Q14. Emergency and safety tips:

1. Gear Built for the Mountains

Our high-performance tents and sleeping bags are engineered for extreme alpine conditions.

• Sleeping Bags: Designed to endure temperatures as low as -5°C to -20°C

• Tents: Provide additional insulation and wind protection for a warm, secure rest each night

We are always prepared for unpredictable mountain weather — and encourage trekkers to share any safety concerns with our team for quick support.

2. Health Monitoring: Daily Oxygen & Pulse Checks

Your well-being is our priority. For high-altitude treks, we conduct daily oxygen saturation and pulse monitoring (as needed) before and during the trek.

This proactive step helps us:

• Detect early signs of altitude sickness

• Make informed decisions for your safety

• Ensure every trekker remains fit and comfortable throughout the journey

3. Emergency Support & Medical Backup

  • Oxygen Cylinders & Medical Kit:

Altitude affects everyone differently. Our guides are equipped with portable oxygen cylinders and essential first-aid medicines for immediate use in case of altitude-related symptoms.

Tip for trekkers: Stay physically prepared — activities like running, cycling, and swimming greatly improve endurance at high altitudes.

  • Stretchers at Every Campsite:

In case of emergencies or injuries, stretchers are available at all campsites, ensuring a safe and swift evacuation to base camp for further care.

  • Radio Communication Across Camps:

Cell networks can be unreliable in the mountains. To bridge the gap, our camps and guides stay connected via a dedicated radio communication system, ensuring quick response in cases of bad weather, missing items, or medical needs.

4. Technical Support on Snowy Slopes

For treks involving snow-covered or technically challenging terrain, our trained technical team is deployed to assist. They ensure:

• Proper route safety

Day 3: Ghairoli Patal (3,050 m / 10,000 ft) to Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft)

🔆 Highlights of the day:

  • Begin the day with a gradual ascent from the forest clearing of Ghairoli Patal

A short halt at Devprayag is recommended to witness the sacred confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers, where they merge to form the holy Ganga (Ganges).

A12. Due to high altitude and strenuous terrain, it is not recommended for children under 12 or elderly people with health issues.
Q13. How should I prepare physically?

Safety

At Trekkaro, we redefine the trekking experience with our Free Trekking Gear (FTG) initiative — a game-changer in the adventure travel industry. We equip our trekkers with top-tier trekking gear at zero additional cost, including premium Decathlon products like:

• Shoes (worth Rs. 6,999)

• Insulated Jackets (-10° C) (worth Rs. 3,299)

• Trekking Poles (worth Rs. 1,299)

This ensures every adventurer, whether first-time or experienced, can enjoy the mountains without the financial burden of buying expensive gear. It's trekking made accessible, safe, and seamless.

• Emergency handling

• Support in difficult sections like icy slopes or narrow ridgelines

With Trekkaro, you’re always in safe and experienced hands — so you can focus on what truly matters: the adventure of a lifetime.
