Roopkund Lake Trek – The Mysterious Lake of Skeletons
Nestled high in the Garhwal Himalayas, Roopkund Lake (15,750 ft) has gained immense popularity among trekkers for its breathtaking landscapes, spiritual aura, and mysterious charm. This glacial lake is famously known as the “Skeleton Lake” because hundreds of ancient human skeletons were discovered at its bottom—sparking legends and scientific curiosity alike.
Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Trishul (7,120 m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,310 m), the lake offers a surreal experience where natural beauty meets timeless mystery. Though small in size for most of the year, Roopkund expands during the monsoon as melting glaciers feed into it.
What to Expect on the Trek:
A well-crafted Roopkund trek itinerary should include:
Trekkers come with varied motives—some driven by the desire to unravel the mystery of the skeletal remains, others to immerse themselves in the pristine wilderness, and many to simply experience the divinity and wonder that the Himalayas bestow at Roopkund.
Best Time to Visit:
Avoid trekking after October: Intense cold, strong winds, and heavy snowfall make the region unsafe, especially for solo trekkers.
Why Roopkund?
Because every step of this journey is a blend of natural grandeur, ancient mystery, and Himalayan spirituality. Whether you’re chasing adventure, history, or peace of mind, Roopkund promises an unforgettable lifetime experience.

From Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft), the trail immediately begins a steep zig-zag climb up a rocky ridge. This is a strenuous ascent at high altitude, where trekkers often take frequent halts to catch their breath. After about 2 km of steady climbing, you’ll reach the Kalu Vinayak temple (4,200 m / 13,800 ft)—a black stone shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

💡 Tip: Start very early (around 4–5 AM) to avoid strong afternoon winds, reduce sun exposure, and allow time for acclimatization at the summit.
Today is the most thrilling and challenging day of the Roopkund trek. Starting very early from Bhagwabasa (4,300 m / 14,100 ft), trekkers begin a steep ascent across rocky terrain and occasional snow patches, using trekking poles for stability. Trekkers can spend time exploring, photographing, and soaking in the surreal beauty of the lake. For those seeking a higher vantage point, a short side trek leads to Junargali (4,880 m / 16,000 ft), offering panoramic views of peaks such as Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and the surrounding glacier-fed valleys. After enjoying the summit, the descent begins via the same route, stopping briefly at Bhagwabasa (4,300 m / 14,100 ft) for rest and lunch, before continuing downhill to Pathar Nachauni (3,870 m / 12,700 ft) for the night. This 12 km trek covers a cumulative ascent of ~480 m (~1,575 ft) to Roopkund, with an optional +80 m (~250 ft) to Junargali, and a total descent of ~930 m (~3,050 ft) on the return. • Sleeping Bags: Designed to endure temperatures as low as -5°C to -20°C

We are always prepared for unpredictable mountain weather — and encourage trekkers to share any safety concerns with our team for quick support.

Your well-being is our priority. For high-altitude treks, we conduct daily oxygen saturation and pulse monitoring (as needed) before and during the trek.
This proactive step helps us:

In case of emergencies or injuries, stretchers are available at all campsites, ensuring a safe and swift evacuation to base camp for further care.

Where others may compromise, we never do. Beyond safety, our second-most important promise is attention to the little things. Whether it’s perfectly timed meals, well-planned acclimatization, or last-minute gear support — we sweat the small stuff so you don’t have to.
ur guides are more than just leaders — they’re motivators, chefs, first responders, and sometimes magicians. With deep knowledge of the terrain and genuine care for your experience, they ensure that every day on the trail is both safe and memorable.
Crafting the perfect trek isn’t easy — but we’ve mastered the art. Each Trekkaro itinerary is refined to strike the ideal balance between activity, rest, flexibility, and discovery. We handpick our stay locations for comfort and character, ensuring a unique experience each night.
We don’t just sell treks — we deliver value. Our packages are thoughtfully priced to offer the best possible experience without unnecessary frills. For those seeking to maximize time, budget, and experience, Trekkaro is your perfect partner in adventure.
What We Expect from You
Trekking with Trekkaro is a shared experience — and you play a vital role in making it amazing, not just for yourself, but for your entire group.
This is not a vacation — it's a transformational journey. Embrace it with a spirit of curiosity, resilience, and flexibility. Whether it’s a cold night, a steep climb, or a sudden change in weather — your attitude defines your adventure.
You don’t need to be an athlete, but a basic level of fitness will enhance your trek. We’re here to help you choose the right trek and get prepared, physically and mentally. A little prep goes a long way toward making your trek enjoyable and safe.
Our trek leaders are trained professionals and safety experts. Trust their decisions — they’re made with the group’s well-being in mind. Whether it's a change in route, pace, or a safety call, your cooperation ensures everyone stays safe and gets the most out of the experience.
At Trekkaro, adventure begins with trust, continues with passion, and ends with lifelong memories. We’re ready — and we’re excited to have you on the trail with us.
At Trekkaro, we redefine the trekking experience with our Free Trekking Gear (FTG) initiative — a game-changer in the adventure travel industry. We equip our trekkers with top-tier trekking gear at zero additional cost, including premium Decathlon products like:
• Shoes (worth Rs. 6,999)
• Insulated Jackets (-10° C) (worth Rs. 3,299)
• Trekking Poles (worth Rs. 1,299)
This ensures every adventurer, whether first-time or experienced, can enjoy the mountains without the financial burden of buying expensive gear. It's trekking made accessible, safe, and seamless.
1. Gear Built for the Mountains
Our high-performance tents and sleeping bags are engineered for extreme alpine conditions.
• Sleeping Bags: Designed to endure temperatures as low as -5°C to -20°C
• Tents: Provide additional insulation and wind protection for a warm, secure rest each night
We are always prepared for unpredictable mountain weather — and encourage trekkers to share any safety concerns with our team for quick support.
2. Health Monitoring: Daily Oxygen & Pulse Checks
Your well-being is our priority. For high-altitude treks, we conduct daily oxygen saturation and pulse monitoring (as needed) before and during the trek.
This proactive step helps us:
• Detect early signs of altitude sickness
• Make informed decisions for your safety
• Ensure every trekker remains fit and comfortable throughout the journey
3. Emergency Support & Medical Backup
Altitude affects everyone differently. Our guides are equipped with portable oxygen cylinders and essential first-aid medicines for immediate use in case of altitude-related symptoms.
Tip for trekkers: Stay physically prepared — activities like running, cycling, and swimming greatly improve endurance at high altitudes.
In case of emergencies or injuries, stretchers are available at all campsites, ensuring a safe and swift evacuation to base camp for further care.
Cell networks can be unreliable in the mountains. To bridge the gap, our camps and guides stay connected via a dedicated radio communication system, ensuring quick response in cases of bad weather, missing items, or medical needs.
4. Technical Support on Snowy Slopes
For treks involving snow-covered or technically challenging terrain, our trained technical team is deployed to assist. They ensure:
• Proper route safety
• Emergency handling
• Support in difficult sections like icy slopes or narrow ridgelines
With Trekkaro, you’re always in safe and experienced hands — so you can focus on what truly matters: the adventure of a lifetime.
