Gulabikantha Trek – The Hidden Gem of Uttarakhand

Perched at an altitude of around 12,000 ft. above sea level, Gulabi Kantha is one of Uttarakhand’s most breathtaking yet lesser-known trekking destinations. This vast alpine meadow lies en route to the famous Dodital freshwater lake trek, but unlike Dodital, it remains untouched by heavy footfall, making it a true hidden paradise for trekkers and nature lovers.

What makes Gulabi Kantha truly special is its 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas. From this vantage point, trekkers can witness the towering Bandarpoonch Peak, Chaukhamba, Kalindi Srikala, and the Shivalik ranges, all bathed in hues of gold during sunrise and sunset. The meadow is also blessed with a diverse variety of flora and fauna, including seasonal wildflowers, Himalayan birds, and the occasional sighting of wildlife.

Despite its beauty, Gulabi Kantha has only recently gained attention, thanks to local villagers and guides who introduced it to a few media channels. Even the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team from Matli explored the region to evaluate its potential for winter adventure sports like skiing. This makes Gulabi Kantha not only a trekking hotspot but also an upcoming hub for year-round adventure.

Best Time to Visit Gulabikantha Trek

Trekkaro recommends December to April as the best time to explore Gulabi Kantha. During winter, the meadow transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for those seeking a challenging snow trek or skiing experience. The months of March and April, on the other hand, bring blooming meadows and pleasant trekking conditions.

If you’re looking for an offbeat Himalayan trek with surreal beauty, adventure, and solitude, the Gulabi Kantha Trek is an experience you simply can’t miss!

How To Reach

Jolly Grant Airport is located approximately 25 kilometers from Dehradun city and serves as the nearest airport. Daily flights are operating between Delhi and Dehradun, making it a convenient option for travelers.

Traveling by train is a comfortable and convenient way to reach Dehradun from Delhi. Here are two recommended overnight options:

Nanda Devi Express (12205)

  • Departure: 23:50 hrs from New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS)

  • Arrival: 05:40 hrs at Dehradun (DDN)

  • Ideal for those who prefer a late-night departure and early morning arrival.

Dehradun Express (12687)

  • Departure: 21:10 hrs from Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM)

  • Arrival: 05:00 hrs at Dehradun (DDN)

  • Suitable for early sleepers who prefer to settle in sooner.

Tip: Book your tickets in advance, especially during peak trekking seasons, to avoid last-minute hassle.

There is regular bus service available from Delhi (ISBT Kashmere Gate) to Dehradun.
We strongly recommend choosing only government-operated buses from inside the ISBT Kashmere Gate for safety and reliability.

Tip: Avoid private buses that operate from outside the ISBT premises, as they are generally unreliable and not recommended.

ATM point and Mobile connectivity

Important Pre-Trek Information

Last ATM – Barkot

  • The last reliable ATM before reaching Hanuman Chatti is located at Barkot, which is about 1 hour and 30 minutes before the basecamp. Trekkers are strongly advised to withdraw sufficient cash here, as ATMs are either unavailable or non-functional beyond this point. Local shops, tea stalls, and transport providers in the higher regions mostly rely on cash transactions, so carrying enough money is a must.

Mobile Network – Barkot

  • Barkot is also the last point where you’re likely to get a stable mobile network, except Jio, which doesn’t work well in this region. After Barkot, connectivity drops significantly, and by the time you reach Hanuman Chatti, mobile signals are almost non-existent. Ensure you complete all important calls, update family members, and settle urgent communication needs before moving ahead.

By keeping these essentials in mind, you’ll have a smoother transition from city convenience to the peaceful wilderness of Hanuman Chatti and beyond.
