## Overview

Most people see Kunjapuri from the window of a pre-dawn taxi. On this trek you earn it: a forest climb from the edge of Rishikesh, a night on the ridge below the temple, and a short walk up the stone stairs in the dark to watch the sun come up over the Garhwal hills. Below you, the Ganga catches the first light. Behind you, on a clear morning, the snow peaks of the Gangotri and Kedarnath country stand along the northern sky.

The Kunjapuri trek climbs from Neer Garh, just above Tapovan in Rishikesh, to the Kunjapuri Devi temple at 1,676 m (5,499 ft) on a forested ridge in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, about 8 km from Narendra Nagar. It is a 2-day trek of about 18 km: up through the villages of Dharkot and Pater on Day 1 to a camp on the ridge, and down through Barkot and Badhera villages to Tapovan on Day 2, after sunrise at the temple. Pickup and drop are in Rishikesh, so the whole trek fits into a weekend from Delhi.

Kunjapuri is one of the Shakti Peeths, the shrines where, according to legend, parts of the goddess Sati fell to earth as Shiva carried her body across the Himalaya. Together with Surkanda Devi and Chandrabadni it forms a sacred triangle of Devi temples in Tehri district, and pilgrims climb to it all year, in the largest numbers during Navratri. For a trekker it is something simpler as well: the first high ridge north of Rishikesh, close enough to reach in a morning, high enough to see the Himalaya.

### A Temple Above the Clouds – What Makes the Kunjapuri Trek Unmissable

The reason to do Kunjapuri on foot, and to sleep up there, is the morning. Day visitors leave Rishikesh at four in the morning and arrive half-asleep in a crowd. On this trek you are already on the ridge. You wake in the dark, drink something hot, and walk a few minutes to the foot of the temple stairs. By the time you reach the courtyard the sky over the eastern hills is turning orange, and the valleys below are still full of shadow, or of cloud on a winter morning, so that the temple seems to float above a white sea.

Then the light reaches the north. On a clear day the horizon lines up from Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini to the Gangotri group and Chaukhamba, while to the south the land falls away to Rishikesh, the bends of the Ganga, Haridwar and the Doon valley. The temple bells start for the morning aarti. It is a view that takes in the plains you came from and the mountains you might go to next, and on this trek you have it with time to spare.

The other half of the trek is the walk itself. Very few visitors see the forest between Rishikesh and the ridge, the small farming villages, the springs and the stepped fields. In two days you go from the ashrams and cafes of Tapovan to a quiet ridge and back, and it never feels far from home – which is exactly why it suits a first trek.

### The Trail Itself

The climb starts near Neer Garh waterfall, a short drive from Tapovan, and the first hour follows a stream through mixed forest of sal, chir pine and broadleaf trees. Above the falls the path becomes a village trail, stone steps and dirt tracks climbing between terraced fields to Dharkot and Pater, where the houses look out over the Ganga valley. Higher up, oak and rhododendron take over, the air cools, and the last stretch joins the ridge a short walk below the temple. The descent on Day 2 takes a different line, through Barkot and Badhera villages and past a small waterfall, so you see new ground on the way down. The trail has no exposed sections and no snow work; the challenge is the steady height gain of about 1,200 m on Day 1.

### Who Is This Trek For?

The Kunjapuri trek is graded easy, and we recommend it for first-time trekkers, families with children who already walk well, school and college groups, and anyone who wants a short, gentle introduction to Himalayan trekking. The harder day is Day 1: about 9 km and 5–6 hours of steady climbing from Neer Garh to the ridge camp, with a height gain of roughly 1,200 m. Day 2 is about 9 km, almost all downhill, which asks more of the knees than the lungs. We recommend three to four weeks of preparation, with brisk walks, stair climbing or jogging. Children aged 8 and above can join with a parent or guardian. Above 60: a doctor’s fitness certificate is needed, and an ECG or TMT report is recommended. Season: September to June, with a break for the monsoon in July and August.

### Key Highlights of the Kunjapuri Trek
- **Sunrise at the Kunjapuri Devi temple** – 1,676 m (5,499 ft), one of the Shakti Peeths of Garhwal, with the morning aarti
- **Himalayan views from a foothill ridge** – Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, the Gangotri group and Chaukhamba on clear mornings
- **The Ganga from above** – Rishikesh, Haridwar and the Doon valley spread out to the south
- **A night on the ridge** – a camp below the temple, with the lights of Rishikesh twinkling far below after dark
- **Villages on foot** – Dharkot, Pater, Barkot and Badhera, with terraced fields, cattle sheds and springs
- **Neer Garh waterfall** – a cool, shaded start to the climb from Tapovan
- **A different trail down** – an up-and-down loop, so Day 2 brings new villages and forest
- **Weekend-friendly** – pickup and drop in Rishikesh, back by mid-afternoon on Day 2

### Best Time to Do the Kunjapuri Trek

The Kunjapuri trek runs from September to June and pauses for the monsoon, when the forest trail turns slippery and clouds hide the sunrise. Because the ridge is only 1,676 m high, the seasons here are mild compared with the high Himalaya; what changes most is the clarity of the view and the heat on the lower trail.

#### September to November – Autumn (Clearest Views)

After the monsoon has washed the air, autumn brings the sharpest mountain views of the year, green fields in the villages and comfortable walking. Days are 18°C to 27°C and nights at camp 9°C to 16°C. Navratri, in September or October, fills the temple with pilgrims and colour. October and November are our favourite months for this trek.

#### December to February – Winter (Sea of Clouds)

Winter mornings are crisp, and the valleys below the ridge fill with cloud and mist, giving the classic view of the temple above a white sea with the snow peaks clear in the north. Days are 10°C to 18°C, while nights at camp fall to 1°C to 7°C, so bring proper warm layers. On a rare cold spell the ridge sees a light dusting of snow that melts within a day or two.

#### March to June – Spring and Summer (Rhododendrons and Long Days)

In March and April the rhododendrons bloom red in the upper forest and the days are pleasant. By May and June the lower trail out of Rishikesh is hot, and we start the climb early. Across the season, days range from 20°C to 32°C and nights at camp from 10°C to 20°C. Haze can blur the distant peaks in summer, but sunrise over the hills stays beautiful, and the ridge stays cooler than the town below.

## Itinerary

### Day 1: Rishikesh to Kunjapuri Ridge Camp

**Route Details:**

**Drive: Rishikesh → Neer Garh (about 8 km, 30 min) | Trek: Neer Garh → Dharkot → Pater → Kunjapuri ridge camp | Distance: 9 km | Duration: 5–6 hrs | Altitude: 450 m → 1,600 m**

We meet at Yog Nagari Rishikesh Railway Station at 09:00 AM. After introductions and a gear check, a short shared-cab ride of about 30 minutes takes the group past Tapovan to the start of the trail near Neer Garh waterfall. Your trek leader gives a short briefing on pace, water and the day ahead, and checks everyone’s pulse and oxygen level before the walk begins.

The first stretch follows the stream up past the Neer Garh falls, shaded by sal, chir pine and broadleaf forest. It is a pleasant warm-up, with pools and small cascades beside the path. Above the waterfall the trail leaves the stream and starts to climb in earnest on stone steps and dirt paths between terraced fields, and the noise of Rishikesh fades behind you.

By late morning you reach Dharkot, a small farming village with views back down to the Ganga. We stop here for a packed lunch and a rest, then continue up to Pater. The climb is steady rather than steep, but it rarely lets up, so walk at your own pace and keep drinking water. Water from village taps is available; your trek leader will tell you where to refill.

Above Pater the forest changes to oak and rhododendron, and the air turns noticeably cooler. The last section joins the ridge a short walk below the temple, where camp is already pitched. Evening brings tea, snacks and, on a clear day, a wide sunset over the hills, then the lights of Rishikesh and Haridwar coming on far below. Dinner is early, as the alarm rings before dawn.

What to Expect:
- 09:00 AM pickup at Yog Nagari Rishikesh Railway Station
- Neer Garh waterfall and a shaded forest start
- Village trail through Dharkot and Pater
- Steady climb of about 1,200 m; the harder of the two days
- Sunset over the Garhwal hills from the ridge
- Overnight: camping on the Kunjapuri ridge in 3-person tents

### Day 2: Sunrise at Kunjapuri Temple, Descent to Tapovan

**Route Details:**

**Trek: Camp → Kunjapuri temple → Barkot → Badhera → Tapovan | Distance: 9 km | Duration: 4–5 hrs | Altitude: 1,600 m → 1,676 m → 400 m**

We wake about an hour before sunrise, which falls between about 05:15 AM in early summer and about 07:00 AM in mid-winter. After a hot drink, the group walks up by headlamp to the road and climbs the stone stairs to the temple courtyard. It is a short walk, but the stairs are steep; take them slowly. At the top you stand at 1,676 m (5,499 ft), the highest point of the trek.

As the sky lightens, the sun rises over the eastern hills and the valleys below turn from blue to gold. On many winter mornings they are filled with cloud. To the north, on a clear morning, Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, the Gangotri group and Chaukhamba catch the first light, while to the south the Ganga winds past Rishikesh towards Haridwar. Stay for the morning aarti if you like; please respect the temple’s customs and remove your shoes in the shrine area.

Back at camp, breakfast is waiting. After packing up, we start the descent on a different trail from the one we climbed, dropping off the ridge through oak and rhododendron forest to Barkot village and then on to Badhera. The path is steep in places and loose after rain, so trekking poles help a great deal, and the trek leader sets a careful pace on the rougher sections.

Lower down, the forest turns to pine and sal again and the trail passes a small waterfall, a good spot for a last break. You reach Tapovan around midday or early afternoon, after about 9 km and 4–5 hours on foot. The trek ends here, and the group can share a cab back to Yog Nagari Rishikesh Railway Station, with time for an afternoon train or bus, or an evening at the Ganga aarti.

What to Expect:
- Pre-dawn walk by headlamp to the Kunjapuri temple
- Sunrise from 1,676 m (5,499 ft) with views of the Gangotri and Kedarnath peaks on clear days
- Morning aarti at the temple
- A new trail down through Barkot and Badhera villages
- Steep, knee-testing descent; trekking poles recommended
- Overnight: no stay (trek ends at Tapovan, Rishikesh)

## Frequently asked questions

### Where is the Kunjapuri trek, and where does it start?

The Kunjapuri trek is in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, on the forested ridge north of Rishikesh, about 8 km from Narendra Nagar. It starts near Neer Garh waterfall, just above Tapovan in Rishikesh, climbs through Dharkot and Pater villages to a camp below the Kunjapuri Devi temple, and comes down through Barkot and Badhera villages to Tapovan. Trekkaro’s pickup is at Yog Nagari Rishikesh Railway Station at 09:00 AM on Day 1.

### How many days does the Kunjapuri trek take from Rishikesh?

The Kunjapuri trek takes 2 days and 1 night, starting and ending in Rishikesh. Day 1 is the climb from Neer Garh to the ridge camp (9 km, 5–6 hours). Day 2 begins with sunrise at the temple and ends with the descent to Tapovan (9 km, 4–5 hours), reaching Rishikesh by early afternoon. The total trekking distance is about 18 km, and the trek fits comfortably into a weekend from Delhi.

### What is the maximum altitude reached on the Kunjapuri trek?

The highest point of the Kunjapuri trek is the Kunjapuri Devi temple at 1,676 m (5,499 ft). The trek starts at about 450 m (1,476 ft) near Neer Garh, so Day 1 gains roughly 1,200 m. This altitude is far below the level where Acute Mountain Sickness becomes a real concern, which makes Kunjapuri a gentle introduction to trekking. The challenge lies in the steady climb, not in thin air.

### What is the difficulty level of the Kunjapuri trek?

The Kunjapuri trek is graded easy. The trail is a well-used village and forest path with no exposed sections or snow work. The harder day is Day 1: about 9 km and 5–6 hours of steady uphill walking with a height gain of roughly 1,200 m. Day 2 is mostly downhill and can be tiring on the knees. With three to four weeks of walking, stair climbing or jogging beforehand, most healthy beginners finish it comfortably.

### What is the best time of year for the Kunjapuri trek?

The best time for the Kunjapuri trek is October and November, when the post-monsoon air gives the clearest Himalayan views. The trek runs from September to June:
- **Autumn (Sep–Nov):** sharp views, green villages and Navratri at the temple.
- **Winter (Dec–Feb):** crisp mornings and a sea of clouds below the ridge.
- **Spring/Summer (Mar–Jun):** rhododendrons in March and April, warmer and hazier later.

We do not run it in July and August, when the trail is slippery.

### Does the Kunjapuri trek have snow at any time of year?

No, the Kunjapuri trek is not a snow trek. At 1,676 m the ridge stays below the regular snowline, and the trail is free of snow for the whole season. On a rare cold spell in winter the temple ridge can get a light dusting that melts within a day or two, but you will not need microspikes or gaiters. If you want to walk in snow, the snow peaks are part of the view rather than the trail.

### How cold does it get at night on the Kunjapuri trek?

Night temperatures at the Kunjapuri ridge camp range from 1°C to 20°C depending on the month:
- **Autumn (Sep–Nov):** day 18°C to 27°C, night 9°C to 16°C
- **Winter (Dec–Feb):** day 10°C to 18°C, night 1°C to 7°C
- **Spring/Summer (Mar–Jun):** day 20°C to 32°C, night 10°C to 20°C

Winter mornings at sunrise are the coldest time of the trek, so keep your jacket handy for the walk up to the temple.

### What is the minimum age for the Kunjapuri trek?

The minimum age for the Kunjapuri trek is 8 years, for children who already walk regularly. Trekkers under 18 must come with a parent or guardian.

There is no upper age limit. Trekkers above 60 are welcome if they are fit and in good cardiovascular health; along with the medical certificate signed by a doctor that each trekker brings, we recommend an ECG or TMT report.

### How do I reach Rishikesh for the Kunjapuri trek pickup?

The Kunjapuri trek pickup is at Yog Nagari Rishikesh Railway Station at 09:00 AM on Day 1. Overnight buses run from Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate to Rishikesh in about 6–7 hours, and trains from Delhi reach Haridwar, about 25 km and an hour by road from Rishikesh, with a few running on to Yog Nagari Rishikesh. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant (DED), about 20 km and 40 minutes from Rishikesh. Transport is not included in the trek fee: we help the group book shared cabs, paid directly to the driver and split among trekkers, and your trek coordinator will confirm the cab fare. The trek ends at Tapovan by early afternoon on Day 2.

The last ATMs are in Rishikesh and Tapovan, and there is none on the trail. Carry some cash in small notes for tea stalls and temple offerings, as cards are not accepted in the villages.

### Do I need a permit for the Kunjapuri trek, and what ID?

No separate permit is needed from you for the Kunjapuri trek: Trekkaro arranges any local permissions and camping charges as part of the trek fee. Please carry an original government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID) along with the medical certificate signed by a doctor. Visiting the Kunjapuri Devi temple is free; any offering is your personal choice. Foreign nationals should carry their passport and a valid Indian visa.

### Is the Kunjapuri trek safe for beginners and families with children?

Yes, the Kunjapuri trek is a gentle overnight trek and is well suited to beginners and families. The altitude is low, the trail has no exposed sections, and the route passes through villages, so help is never far away. Trekkaro keeps batches to 20 trekkers, with a NIM-certified (or equivalent) trek leader, daily SpO2 and pulse checks, a first-aid kit, oxygen and a stretcher with the group. The main risks are slips on the steep descent, heat on summer afternoons and dehydration.

### What should I carry for the Kunjapuri trek, and what gear is free?

For the Kunjapuri trek, Free Trekking Gear covers Decathlon trekking shoes, a -10°C jacket, trekking poles, gaiters and microspikes (₹3,000 refundable deposit + ₹200 washing). You should bring:
- A 30–40 L backpack with rain cover
- Two 1-litre water bottles
- A headlamp for the pre-dawn walk to the temple
- Thermal inners and a fleece (two warm layers in winter)
- Quick-dry T-shirts and trek pants
- Sun cap, sunscreen and sunglasses
- A light rain jacket and personal medicines

### What are the stay and food like on the Kunjapuri trek?

On the Kunjapuri trek you spend one night camping on the ridge below the temple, in 3-person tents with sleeping bags and mats, with a dining tent and a toilet tent at the campsite. Food is simple, freshly cooked vegetarian meals: packed lunch on Day 1, evening tea and snacks, a hot dinner, and breakfast on Day 2 after sunrise. Tell your trek coordinator in advance about any dietary needs, and we will do our best to help.
