Kashmir Great Lakes (KGL) Trek: A Symphony of Lakes, Peaks, and Meadows
The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL) is one of the most breathtaking adventures in the Indian Himalayas, often hailed as the “crown jewel” of trekking in Kashmir. Stretching over 74.5 km, this 7-day trek is a dream come true for nature lovers, offering an unmatched blend of alpine lakes, lush meadows, snow-clad peaks, and vibrant wildflowers.
The journey begins at Shitkadi, near Sonmarg, and concludes at Naranag, passing through a series of stunning landscapes that feel straight out of a painting. Along the way, trekkers encounter seven pristine alpine lakes—each reflecting shades of turquoise, emerald, and blue under the vast Himalayan sky. From the sparkling Vishansar and Kishansar Lakes to the twin gems of Gangbal and Nundkol, every lake has its own charm and legend.
Adding to the grandeur are the three high mountain passes—Nichnai Pass (4,032 m), Gadsar Pass (4,180 m), and Zaj Pass (4,047 m). These vantage points reward trekkers with sweeping views of valleys, glaciers, and towering peaks such as Mount Harmukh (5,400 m). The trek also includes five river valley crossings, lush rolling meadows dotted with shepherd huts, and encounters with the region’s rich flora and fauna.
Rated as a moderate trek, KGL demands good fitness but does not require prior high-altitude experience, making it ideal for both seasoned trekkers and enthusiastic beginners. Expect to walk 10–16 km daily, navigating rocky trails, river crossings, and gentle ascents.

We begin our journey from Shitkadi at 8:00 AM, following a vehicle track that descends gently towards the Sindh River — the true starting point of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. After crossing the river, the trail quickly rises and, in about ten minutes, opens up into a vast stretch of green meadows overlooking Sonmarg. From here, civilization fades into the distance, and the trek truly begins!
The early morning sun casts a golden glow on the Sindh River, snaking gracefully through the valley with towering mountains standing guard on either side. This view only grows more magnificent as we climb higher.
After about 30 minutes of ascent, we reach the top of the meadow, surrounded by maple, pine, and silver birch trees. The trail continues with a moderate gradient, weaving through rolling meadows, gushing brooks, and sparkling streams, offering plenty of water refill points along the way.
By late afternoon, we arrive at the Nichnai campsite, often called the Valley of Wildflowers. Nestled beside a lively stream, it’s a serene spot to end the day.

💡 Tip: The pass is windy and often cold—keep a warm layer handy. Carry a packed lunch since today’s trek is long and you’ll want to eat on the way.
Despite the moderate gradient, today is one of the longer walking days, so we start early at 8:00 AM. The day unfolds like a moving canvas, each section offering a dramatic shift in scenery.
We begin with a gentle walk through endless green meadows, following the river from Nichnai campsite. Look for safe crossing points, as the Nichnai Pass lies on the far side. Once across, the trail gradually climbs towards the pass, with the peak visible right from camp.
The ascent takes about an hour, with bends along the ridgeline leading us higher. At first, you reach what looks like the top, but the actual pass lies further ahead. The final stretch feels like a natural tunnel, flanked by snow-draped mountains on the left and rugged, rising ridges on the right.
At the top of Nichnai Pass (4,032 m), the landscape is stark yet mesmerizing. From here, the trail plunges steeply over rocky ground into sprawling meadows below. Tiny alpine flowers in vibrant colors dot the grass, painting the valley floor in contrast to the snow above.
A new river emerges here, carving trails into the earth. Multiple narrow paths stretch into the horizon, each leading you deeper into Kashmir’s wilderness. On one side are glittering snow peaks, and on the other, barren mountain faces—a stunning duality that makes this stretch unforgettable.
The final section is a gentle meadow walk, followed by another river crossing before reaching our campsite. Not far from here lies Vishansar Lake, a dazzling alpine jewel with startlingly blue waters that captivate at first sight. Close by is Kishansar Lake, its twin, equally breathtaking.
We camp near Vishansar, surrounded by alpine grandeur, where the reflections of mountains in the lake add a magical touch to the evening.
🏕 Stay: Tent (3 trekkers per tent)
🍲Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks, Dinner
🔆 Highlights:
💡 Tip: This is a long and strenuous day, so keep snacks handy and refill your bottles at streams. The pass can be windy and chilly—layer up before starting the climb.
Today is often regarded as the most spectacular day of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. The journey takes you over the highest point of the trek—the Gadsar Pass (4,180 m / 13,715 ft.)—and treats you to a series of unforgettable alpine vistas.
We start early from Vishansar campsite, with the mighty lake still shimmering under the morning light. The trail first takes us to Kishansar Lake, a short distance away and equally stunning with its turquoise-blue waters reflecting the surrounding peaks. From here, the climb towards Gadsar Pass begins.
The ascent is steady and long but immensely rewarding. At the top of Gadsar Pass, the highest point of the trek, you’re greeted with a panoramic view of both Vishansar and Kishansar Lakes together below, a sight that will stay etched in your memory forever. On clear days, snow-capped peaks loom majestically in the distance, completing the picture.
The descent from the pass is steep at first, transitioning into rolling meadows scattered with wildflowers. This stretch feels almost dreamlike, with streams gushing through grassy valleys, flocks of sheep grazing, and distant glaciers feeding the rivers.
After several hours of trekking through these meadows, we arrive at Gadsar Lake, often called the “Lake of Flowers.” Set against rugged cliffs and snowy ridges, this serene lake is renowned for its vibrant alpine blooms and crystal-clear waters.
The campsite near Gadsar Lake is one of the most scenic on the trek, offering peace and solitude surrounded by raw Himalayan beauty.
🏕 Stay: Tent (3 trekkers per tent)
🍲Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks, Dinner
🔆 Highlights:
💡 Tip: Keep your ID card easily accessible for the army check. This campsite is excellent for photography—try capturing the reflections of the peaks in the lake during golden hour.
The day begins with the toughest section right at the start—a steep ascent for about an hour and a half. Once this climb is behind us, the trail levels out into a comparatively gentle walk all the way to camp.
The scenery today contrasts sharply with the lush river valleys of previous days. Here, the terrain turns rugged and stark, with boulders and rocky stretches dominating the path. Meadows are sparse, broken by occasional patches of delicate white flowers and the sparkle of small brooks cutting through the rocks.
Midway, we pass through an army checkpoint, where trekkers are required to show their original ID cards for verification before continuing further. Beyond the camp, the landscape softens once again into rolling grasslands, leading us towards the lakes.
Soon, the first of the Satsar Lakes comes into view. “Satsar” translates to seven lakes—a cluster of interconnected alpine lakes strung together in a narrow north–south valley. These lakes eventually drain into the Wangath Nallah, a tributary of the Sindh River.
The campsite is set near one of the larger lakes, framed by green slopes and rugged mountains. It’s a picturesque and tranquil setting, perfect for resting and preparing for the trek’s grand finale in the coming days.
🏕 Stay: Tent (3 trekkers per tent)
🍲 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks, Dinner
🔆 Highlights:
💡 Tip: The boulder sections can be tricky—use trekking poles for balance. Keep your camera ready at Zaj Pass, as the view of Harmukh with Gangbal & Nundkol Lakes is the most iconic image of the trek.
We set out from the Satsar campsite, following a trail that immediately throws us into an adventurous stretch of boulder hopping. The rocks here demand caution—many trekkers instinctively drop down on all fours, scrambling from one stone to the next to keep balance. Be mindful of loose rocks that shift underfoot; patience and steady steps will carry you across safely.
After clearing this rocky section, the path opens up near the largest and final Satsar Lake, shimmering quietly in its alpine bowl. From here, the climb begins in earnest—a steep ascent lasting nearly three and a half hours. The terrain turns stark and rugged, with barren ridgelines rising ahead. Yet, the reward for this effort is one of the most dramatic moments of the entire trek: a ridge-top view that suddenly unveils Gangbal and Nundkol Lakes lying far below, perfectly framed in the valley, with the towering Harmukh Glacier feeding them. Mist and clouds drift across the twin lakes, alternately concealing and revealing their turquoise brilliance. It’s a scene so theatrical, it compels you to pause and simply absorb the wonder.
From this high vantage point, the trail plunges downward in a long descent to Gangbal Lake, where tonight’s campsite awaits. Unlike the more secluded camps earlier, you’ll notice more trekkers and tents scattered here—Gangbal and Nundkol are popular spots, famed for their trout fishing and glacial beauty.
The Nundkol campsite sits in a stunning amphitheater at the base of Mount Harmukh (5,400 m). A jagged glacier clings to its slopes, and the way light and clouds play across the icy face is mesmerizing. After settling in, take time to explore both lakes. Nundkol is lively and scenic, while Gangbal, just a short walk away, feels quieter and more meditative. Its banks are lined with smooth, colorful pebbles, and the surrounding ridges create a serene enclosure. Remnants of a glacier rest at the lake’s edge, feeding its crystal waters.
Stroll along the shores, soak in the reflections, and let the calmness of this alpine paradise mark the perfect close to your day. Just remember to return before darkness falls—the evenings here can be as still as they are spellbinding.

🔆 Highlights
💡 Tip: Use knee support or trekking poles for the steep descent. Keep your camera handy in the meadows—you might capture some of the most memorable views of the trek on this last day.
Today marks the final leg of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. We begin with a gentle walk along the ridgeline stretching out from Gangabal campsite. The first 7 km are fairly easy, with flat stretches and mild ascents across rolling meadows fringed with pine forests. Scattered Gujjar huts along the way add a rustic charm, making you pause and wonder what life is like in this remote wilderness.
After this, the trail drops sharply into dense pine forests. The descent is long, often muddy, and can be hard on the knees, so trekking poles are strongly recommended. The village of Naranag seems deceptively close at times, but it takes steady walking to finally reach the road head.
By afternoon, we will arrive in Naranag, where our vehicles will be waiting. From here, we drive back to Srinagar (approx. 3 hrs), reaching the city around 6:00 PM.
⚠️ Important Note: If you plan to leave Srinagar the same day, book your onward journey after 9:00 PM to allow for possible delays.
🍲 Meals: Breakfast & Lunch included
🛏️ Stay: Not included (trek ends at Naranag)
🔆 Why keep a Buffer Day?
The Kashmir Great Lakes trek passes through high-altitude regions where weather conditions can change suddenly. Heavy rains, snowfall, or landslides may sometimes delay the itinerary. For this reason, we strongly recommend keeping an extra buffer day at the end of your trek.
⚠️ Important: Please plan your return tickets with this buffer day in mind. If you have a strict schedule, book flexible travel options for your return journey.
The nearest airport is Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar, which is well connected to all major airports in India. From the airport, you can hire a taxi to the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), Srinagar, a drive of about 45–60 minutes. TRC is the common pickup point for trekkers heading towards Sonmarg and onwards to Shitkari Basecamp.
If you prefer train travel, there are two convenient railway stations nearby:
Jammu Tawi Railway Station – approx. 260 km from Srinagar. From here, it takes around 8 hours by bus or taxi to reach Srinagar.
Udhampur Railway Station – approx. 200 km from Srinagar. The onward journey takes about 6 hours by bus or taxi.
From Srinagar, trekkers can proceed to the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) for the onward drive to Sonmarg (80 km) and finally to Shitkari Basecamp.
The Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), Srinagar, can be easily reached by bus or shared taxi from any major bus stand in the city. The ride usually takes 25–30 minutes, depending on traffic. From the TRC, trekkers will proceed towards Sonmarg (80 km, ~3 hours) and then on to Shitkari Basecamp.

Our high-performance tents and sleeping bags are engineered for extreme alpine conditions.
• Sleeping Bags: Designed to endure temperatures as low as -5°C to -20°C
• Tents: Provide additional insulation and wind protection for a warm, secure rest each night
We are always prepared for unpredictable mountain weather — and encourage trekkers to share any safety concerns with our team for quick support.
2. Health Monitoring: Daily Oxygen & Pulse Checks
Your well-being is our priority. For high-altitude treks, we conduct daily oxygen saturation and pulse monitoring (as needed) before and during the trek.
This proactive step helps us:
• Detect early signs of altitude sickness
• Make informed decisions for your safety
• Ensure every trekker remains fit and comfortable throughout the journey
3. Emergency Support & Medical Backup
Altitude affects everyone differently. Our guides are equipped with portable oxygen cylinders and essential first-aid medicines for immediate use in case of altitude-related symptoms.
Tip for trekkers: Stay physically prepared — activities like running, cycling, and swimming greatly improve endurance at high altitudes.
In case of emergencies or injuries, stretchers are available at all campsites, ensuring a safe and swift evacuation to base camp for further care.
Cell networks can be unreliable in the mountains. To bridge the gap, our camps and guides stay connected via a dedicated radio communication system, ensuring quick response in cases of bad weather, missing items, or medical needs.
4. Technical Support on Snowy Slopes
For treks involving snow-covered or technically challenging terrain, our trained technical team is deployed to assist. They ensure:
