The Hampta Pass is an amazing trek for all levels of experience. It offers a thrilling High Himalayan Pass crossing with beautiful views from the top, encompassing the lush green valleys of Kullu and Manali, and the semi-arid area of the Lahaul valley. This path may not be an easy one, but there are still fewer challenges than some other treks in India. Whilst being moderately challenging in parts and weather-changeable, it is also one of the shortest and most enjoyable treks to be had in the country.
The gem Hampta pass journey offers unmatched variety and excitement along the trail to take care of any exhaustion, starting in the gorgeous Manali Valley, just a short ride from the city of Manali. As we hike through the lush green landscape of the first two days, we pass numerous meadows inhabited by local shepherds and one camp at an amazing location. It is a very relaxing stage.
We traverse the wild terrain, from rivers and streams to waterfalls. Along the way, you will find a mix of pine, deodar, spruce, horse chestnut, oak, and birch trees, while also encountering sheep, shepherd dogs, and birds such as white-capped redstart and whistling thrush. Depending on when you visit you may see various Alpine flowers too. The toughest leg of this journey takes us to Hampta Pass; a route that might require boulder riding and climbing snow-covered slopes under certain conditions. When you get there, be sure to take in the breathtaking view of nearby peaks like Deo tibba and Indrasana – a marvellous experience that will forever remain in your memory.

Today is an interesting day. We cross the stream immediately after the campsite and begin to gain elevation and continue towards a gorge section, heading towards the river on the right. We will pass through the Boulder section, crossing the wildflower-filled plains, a waterfall and a side river, which may require careful handling to reach Balu Ka Ghera campsite. We relax at the campsite and charge to climb the Hampta Pass the next day. Overnight stay in tents.
Today the weather and trail conditions will decide what time we leave, but it will be sure to get up early in the morning. Depending on the weather and weather conditions, walking is likely to be partially / completely on snow. From the camp we start with a steep climb up the creepy slopes to reach a ridge and from here we proceed to another ridge which leads to the pass. This climb will take about 4-5 hours and one will be rewarded with views of the whole world. The peaks of Indrasana and Deo Tibba completely dominate the landscape and the ranges towards Lahaul seem quite majestic. The descent is a little trickier than climbing. It can also vary slightly depending on the snow conditions. Overnight stay in camps.
It is a gentle downhill walk beginning with Shea Goru. You still walk along the river in the valley between the mountain ranges. After an hour you can see the Chhatru road just a short distance away. The mountains in front of it are barren with specs of greenery - a typical Lahaul look. As you get closer to the road, the descent becomes a bit tricky. You will need to cross the edges of the cliffs and sometimes it can be easy to leave the rocky section and descend into the river / glacier bed below to get back up. You are still at a height, but you have the road right and the Chandra river separates you from the road. Two to three huge glacial flows from the mountains merge downward into the Chandra River. You will need to cross these glaciers to reach campsite that contains water.
From Chhatru, drive in vehicles to the majestic Chandratal. And after soaking in the peaceful vibes of the Chandrataal Lake, return back to Chhatru campsite. Please note that due to landslides or snowfall, the route to Chandratal is sometimes blocked. If the road is found closed then Chandratal drive will not be done. Overnight stays in tents.
On the last day, after having breakfast at Chhatru campsite, transportation will be arranged for trekkers accordingly and head back to Manali which is a 3-4 hours’ drive from Chhatru. You can take a halt at any midpoint for lunch (exclusive of trek cost). Once the team reach Manali, trekkers can make their further travel accordingly.
