Dodital–Darwa Pass Trek - A Sacred Lake, A Panoramic Pass

The Dodital–Darwa Pass Trek is a captivating Himalayan journey that takes trekkers deep into the heart of the Assi Ganga Valley in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. Spanning nearly 40 kilometers, the trail begins from the village of Agoda and winds its way through pristine forests, lively streams, and high-altitude meadows before reaching the calm waters of Dodital Lake at 3,024 meters. From there, the trek continues to the challenging yet rewarding Darwa Pass, which soars to an impressive 4,151 meters.

Dodital, also known locally as Dhundi-tal or Ganesha-ka-tal, is steeped in mythology. According to legend, it is the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, and a small temple dedicated to him stands beside the lake. This freshwater lake is not only sacred but also geographically significant, as it feeds the Assi Ganga River, which later merges with the mighty Bhagirathi River at Gangori.

The approach to Dodital is a delightful mix of natural beauty and cultural encounters. The trail passes through oak, pine, and rhododendron forests that remain vibrant through most of the year. Along the way, trekkers can spot Himalayan birds, mountain herbs, and the occasional village hut tucked away in the wilderness. Manjhi, a meadow-like settlement en route, makes for a popular campsite and offers a refreshing pause before reaching the lake.

Upon arrival, the emerald-green waters of Dodital welcome trekkers into a setting that feels almost untouched by time. During winter, the lake partially freezes, and the surrounding forests wear a thick coat of snow, transforming the region into a storybook winter landscape. The peaceful environment makes it an ideal spot for camping and quiet reflection.

For those who wish to push further, the trek from Dodital to Darwa Pass is a true test of endurance. The ascent is steep and rugged, cutting through birch forests, rocky ridges, and narrow passages. The effort is richly rewarded at the top with sweeping panoramic views of Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, and other Garhwal Himalayan peaks, making it one of the most memorable vantage points in the region.

The Dodital–Darwa Pass trek is an inspiring blend of mythology, wilderness, and adventure, perfect for trekkers seeking both spiritual depth and Himalayan grandeur.

Best Time to Visit:

  • Summer (April – June): Pleasant weather, blooming forests, crystal-clear views of the Himalayas.

  • Post-monsoon (September – November): Clear skies, lush landscapes, and fewer crowds.

  • Winter (December – March): Dodital is covered in snow, making it ideal for snow trekking & skiing experiences

Not advisable in July–August due to heavy rains and risk of landslides.

Day 2: Agoda (2,250 m / 7,382 ft.) to Manjhi (2,700 m / 8,860 ft.)

🔆 Highlights:

  • Gentle ascent through oak, deodar, and rhododendron forest
  • Chances of spotting Himalayan birds and langurs
  • Open meadows with first views of snow-clad ridges
  • Picturesque campsite near a stream in Manjhi
  • 🥾 Trek Distance: 6 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 3–4 hours · 🗻 Altitude Gain: ⬆️ From 2,250 m (Agoda) to 2,700 m (Manjhi)

Leaving Agoda after breakfast, the trail ascends gradually through thick forest, offering refreshing shade and glimpses of the surrounding valleys. The walk is pleasant, with stretches of open meadows where you can pause and enjoy the mountain air. Birdsong accompanies you along the way, and the occasional sound of a mountain stream adds to the serenity.

By early afternoon, you’ll reach Manjhi (2,700 m), a charming settlement with scattered shepherd huts and lush grasslands. The campsite here, beside a clear stream, is peaceful and scenic — an ideal acclimatization spot before heading higher. After lunch, you can explore the meadows, relax by the water, or simply enjoy the stillness of the mountains.

🍲 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included
🛏️ Stay: Campsite (tents on triple sharing)

💡 Tip: Keep your camera ready — the forest section between Agoda and Manjhi is one of the best for spotting wildlife and capturing the play of sunlight through the trees.

Day 3: Manjhi (2,700 m / 8,860 ft.) to Dodital Lake (3,050 m / 10,006 ft.)

🔆 Highlights:

  • Gradual climb through thick forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron
  • Clear streams and alpine flowers along the trail
  • First breathtaking view of Dodital Lake, a serene high-altitude freshwater lake

After a warm breakfast at Manjhi, the trail continues to climb gently through a dense canopy of rhododendron and oak. This section feels truly magical — shafts of sunlight piercing through the trees, the crisp mountain air, and the sound of bubbling streams guiding you along. During spring, blooming rhododendrons paint the trail in vibrant red and pink hues.

After about 4–5 hours of trekking, the forest suddenly opens up to reveal Dodital Lake (3,050 m) — a pristine emerald lake surrounded by lush meadows and snow-dusted peaks. This sacred lake, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, is a highlight of the trek. On the banks lies a small Ganesh Temple, where trekkers often pause for blessings.

Spend the evening strolling around the lakeside meadows, watching trout swim in the crystal-clear waters, and soaking in the serenity of this Himalayan gem.

After an early breakfast by the lake, set out for the climb to Darwa Top (4,150 m). The trail ascends steeply at times, taking you through forests that thin out into alpine meadows. As you gain altitude, the trees give way to open ridges with increasing views of the snow-capped ranges.

The final push to Darwa Pass and onward to Darwa Top rewards you with jaw-dropping 360° views of some of the most iconic Garhwal Himalayan peaks, including Bandarpunch (6,316 m) and Swargarohini (6,252 m). On a clear day, the vistas extend all the way toward the Gangotri range.

Spend some time soaking in the panorama, taking photographs, and enjoying packed snacks before beginning your descent. You retrace your steps back to Dodital Lake, arriving by late afternoon or evening. The descent feels gentler and gives you time to notice alpine flowers, marmots, or even the flight of Himalayan griffons overhead.

🍲 Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner included
🛏️ Stay: Campsite by Dodital Lake (tents on twin/triple sharing)

💡 Tip: Carry plenty of water and snacks — this is the most demanding day of the trek, but also the most rewarding. Walking poles are very useful for steep descents.

After breakfast, begin your descent from Dodital Lake, retracing the familiar forest trail. The walk down is faster, but you’ll want to take your time — the forest sections are rich in birdlife and you may spot woodpeckers, barbets, or Himalayan magpies.

Pause for lunch near Manjhi before continuing downhill to Agoda village, where cozy homestays and warm hospitality await. After four nights of camping, the comfort of a village stay feels especially rewarding.

🍲 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included
🛏️ Stay: Guesthouse / Homestay (on a triple or quad sharing basis)

💡 Tip: Trekking poles are a blessing for today’s descent — they’ll save your knees on the steeper forest stretches.

Day 6: Drive from Agoda to Dehradun (~700 m / 2,296 ft.)

🔆 Highlights:

  • Scenic drive along the Assi Ganga and Bhagirathi rivers
  • Pass through Uttarkashi, a bustling Himalayan town

  • Journey ends at Dehradun, with memories of the Dodital–Darwa Top trek

By evening, you’ll arrive in Dehradun, marking the end of your trek. Take away the unforgettable images of Dodital Lake shimmering in alpine silence and the panoramic Himalayan views from Darwa Top — memories that will last a lifetime.

🍲 Meals: Breakfast included
🛏️ Stay: Not included (trip ends on arrival at Dehradun)

Jolly Grant Airport is located approximately 25 kilometers from Dehradun, serving as the nearest airport. Daily flights are operating between Delhi and Dehradun, making it a convenient option for travelers.

Traveling by train is a comfortable and convenient way to reach Dehradun from Delhi. Here are two recommended overnight options:
