Gaumukh - Tapovan Trek: Walk to the Source of the Ganges, Stay at the Feet of Shivling

The word “Gaumukh” comes from Sanskrit, where Gau means cow and Mukh means mouth. As per ancient belief, the glacier snout once resembled the face of a cow, hence the name. Similarly, “Tapovan” translates to Tapas (spiritual practice) and Van (forest), meaning “the forest of meditation and austerity.”

Gaumukh is one of the main sources of the sacred River Ganga. It lies at an altitude of 3,900 m (12,795 ft.) in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, and is about 18 km from Gangotri Temple. The glacier snout forms the origin of the Bhagirathi River, which gushes out with immense force. The surrounding terrain is rugged, with scattered boulders, broken ice, and hard glacial snow. A little before Gaumukh, trekkers are greeted with awe-inspiring views of the legendary Mt. Shivling (6,543 m), often regarded as one of the most beautiful peaks in the Himalayas.

From Gaumukh, the trail continues to Tapovan, a spectacular high-altitude meadow surrounded by streams, wildflowers, and panoramic Himalayan peaks. Tapovan also serves as the base camp for mountaineering expeditions to Shivling, Bhagirathi peaks, and other Garhwal giants. Known for its spiritual aura and natural beauty, Tapovan is considered among the finest alpine meadows in India, attracting saints, mountaineers, and trekkers alike.

Best Time to Visit:

  • Summer (May–June): The trail opens after winter, with snow still present in early May.
  • Autumn (September–October): The most popular season, offering clear skies, pleasant weather, and breathtaking mountain views.
  • Winter (November onwards): Not advisable due to extreme cold and heavy snowfall, making the region inaccessible.

En route, you’ll cross charming hill towns like Uttarkashi, Bhatwari, Harshil, and Dharali, each offering glimpses of the Himalayan way of life.

Gangotri, situated at 3,065 m (10,055 ft), is not only the base camp for the Gaumukh–Tapovan trek but also a revered pilgrimage site, being one of the four sacred shrines of the Chota Char Dham. According to legend, this is where the River Ganga descended to Earth, sanctified by Lord Shiva.

Day 2: Gangotri (3,065 m / 10,055 ft.) to Chirbasa (3,560 m / 11,680 ft.)

🔆 Highlights:

  • First day of trekking along the Bhagirathi River
  • Gentle trail through pine and deodar forests
  • Scenic views of the Bhagirathi peaks and the surrounding snow-capped mountains

  • 🥾 Trek Distance: 9 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 4–5 hours · 🗻 Altitude Gain: ⬆️ ~495 m (~1,625 ft.)

Your trek begins from the sacred town of Gangotri, following the trail along the right bank of the Bhagirathi River. The route is mostly gradual, making it a comfortable first day. As you ascend, the path takes you through a forest of pine and deodar, with the river flowing alongside and snow-capped peaks peeking through the trees.

The crisp mountain air and soothing sound of the river make the journey refreshing. Midway, you may spot small tea stalls run by locals where trekkers often rest. Keep an eye out for Himalayan birds and the occasional blue sheep (bharal) grazing on the slopes.

By early afternoon, you’ll reach Chirbasa (3,560 m / 11,680 ft.), named for its surrounding pine trees. This open camping ground offers magnificent views of the Bhagirathi massif and marks the perfect spot for your first night under the stars.

Day 3: Chirbasa (3,560 m / 11,680 ft.) to Bhojwasa (3,775 m / 12,385 ft.)

🔆 Highlights:

  • Gentle trek along the Bhagirathi River with wide-open valley views
  • Transition from pine forests to barren, high-altitude terrain
  • First clear views of the Bhagirathi peaks (I, II, III)

  • Sunset views over the Himalayas
  • 🥾 Trek Distance: 5 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 3–4 hours · 🗻 Altitude Gain: ⬆️ ~215 m (~705 ft.)

💡 Tip: Today’s trek is short and comfortable—perfect for acclimatization before heading to Gaumukh and Tapovan. Use the extra time at Bhojwasa to rest, hydrate, and soak in the beauty.

From Chirbasa, the trail continues along the right bank of the Bhagirathi River. The dense pine cover starts to thin, and the landscape gradually turns rugged with sparse vegetation and rocky terrain. The river widens here, and the views of the surrounding mountains become more dramatic with every step.

This section is relatively easy, with gentle ascents, making it suitable for steady pacing. On the way, you may encounter small shepherd huts and spot trekkers heading towards or returning from Gaumukh.

After about 3–4 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Bhojwasa (3,775 m / 12,385 ft.), a vast open ground named after the Bhojpatra (birch) trees that once thrived here. The campsite offers sweeping views of the Bhagirathi massif and is considered one of the most scenic halts of the trek. The evenings here are magical, with golden light reflecting on the surrounding snowy peaks.

Spend the rest of the day relaxing, acclimatizing, and preparing for the adventurous trek to Gaumukh and Tapovan the next morning.

🏕 Stay: Tent (3 trekkers per tent)

  • 🥾 Trek Distance: 9 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 6–7 hours · 🗻 Altitude Gain: ⬆️ ~675 m (~2,215 ft.)

💡 Tip: Start early today (by 6:00 AM) as the trek is long and challenging. Carry enough water, snacks, and sun protection.

From Bhojwasa, follow the trail along the Bhagirathi River to reach Gaumukh Glacier in about 2–3 hours. “Gaumukh,” meaning Cow’s Mouth, is the mythological and geographical source of the River Ganga. The glacier snout is awe-inspiring, with ice blocks breaking and crashing into the river.

After spending time offering prayers and absorbing the divine atmosphere, prepare for the challenging ascent to Tapovan. The climb is steep, crossing glacial moraines, rocky patches, and steep ridges. The trail requires caution but rewards you with some of the most spectacular views of the entire trek.

Reaching Tapovan (4,450 m / 14,600 ft.), you are welcomed by a vast alpine meadow with wildflowers, streams, and a surreal backdrop of towering Himalayan peaks. Dominating the skyline is the majestic Mount Shivling, rising like a needle into the sky.

🔆 Highlights:

  • Morning meditation and photography at Tapovan Meadows
  • Witness the sunrise over Shivling & Bhagirathi peaks
  • Descend from the high-altitude meadow with grand Himalayan views
  • Revisit the divine aura of Gaumukh Glacier on the way down
  • Camp again beside the serene Bhojwasa valley
  • 🥾 Trek Distance: 9 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 4–5 hours · 🗻 Altitude Loss: ⬇️ ~675 m (~2,215 ft.)

💡 Tip: The descent is easier but requires careful footing on the glacial moraines and steep sections. Start early to enjoy a relaxed walk back to Bhojwasa.

Wake up at Tapovan for one of the most mesmerizing sights of the trek—the golden sunrise on Mount Shivling. The entire meadow glows under the first rays of the sun, creating a divine atmosphere. Spend some quiet moments in reflection or photography amidst the high Himalayan peaks.

After breakfast, begin the descent towards Gaumukh. Retracing your steps across rocky moraine terrain and glacier slopes, you’ll again be greeted by the powerful sight of the Ganga emerging from the glacier’s mouth. This spot is perfect for a short break, prayers, or simply soaking in the spiritual energy.

Continue trekking downhill towards Bhojwasa, with the Bhagirathi River flowing beside you. The journey back feels quicker and lighter, as the air thickens with decreasing altitude. By afternoon, you’ll reach Bhojwasa, where the serene landscape and quiet campsite offer the perfect setting for rest and reflection.

Evening at Bhojwasa is calm, with opportunities to interact with fellow trekkers, capture the starlit sky, and prepare for the journey back to Gangotri.

  • 🥾 Trek Distance: 14 km · ⏱️ Trek Duration: 6–7 hours · 🗻 Altitude Loss: ⬇️ ~710 m (~2,330 ft.)

💡 Tip: Start early from Bhojwasa to reach Gangotri by afternoon, giving you time for temple darshan and a relaxed evening in the holy town.

Wake up in Bhojwasa, your last morning amidst the high-altitude silence of the Gangotri National Park. After breakfast, begin the descent back to Gangotri. The route retraces the same trail, but descending allows you to notice fresh details—lush forests, flowing streams, and panoramic mountain views.

The trek initially follows the river, offering several scenic halts. After around 2 hours, you’ll cross Chirbasa (3,560 m / 11,680 ft.), known for its dense pine and birch trees. The walk from here is gentler, weaving through valleys and offering glimpses of grazing meadows and cascading waterfalls.

As you approach Devdarshini Point, the first views of Gangotri town and its surrounding forests appear—a heartwarming sight after days in the wilderness. Continue downhill until you reach Gangotri temple (3,065 m / 10,055 ft.), marking the end of your trek.

Evening can be spent exploring the local market, revisiting the Gangotri temple for darshan, or simply enjoying a hot meal and the comfort of a guesthouse after camping nights.

The journey follows the Bhagirathi River down to Uttarkashi, passing through charming villages, forests, and valleys. On the way, enjoy the beauty of Harshil and Dharali, known for their apple orchards and serene landscapes.

On the way, enjoy the beauty of Harshil and Dharali, known for their apple orchards and serene landscapes.

Further down, you’ll pass Uttarkashi town, a hub for mountaineering and river rafting activities. Continue via Mussoorie, a popular hill station, before descending into the Doon Valley.

Arrive at Dehradun by evening, marking the end of your unforgettable Gaumukh–Tapovan trek.

Safety

At Trekkaro, we redefine the trekking experience with our Free Trekking Gear (FTG) initiative — a game-changer in the adventure travel industry. We equip our trekkers with top-tier trekking gear at zero additional cost, including premium Decathlon products like:

• Shoes (worth Rs. 6,999)

• Insulated Jackets (-10° C) (worth Rs. 3,299)

• Trekking Poles (worth Rs. 1,299)

This ensures every adventurer, whether first-time or experienced, can enjoy the mountains without the financial burden of buying expensive gear. It's trekking made accessible, safe, and seamless.

1. Gear Built for the Mountains

Our high-performance tents and sleeping bags are engineered for extreme alpine conditions.

• Sleeping Bags: Designed to endure temperatures as low as -5°C to -20°C

• Tents: Provide additional insulation and wind protection for a warm, secure rest each night

We are always prepared for unpredictable mountain weather — and encourage trekkers to share any safety concerns with our team for quick support.

2. Health Monitoring: Daily Oxygen & Pulse Checks

Your well-being is our priority. For high-altitude treks, we conduct daily oxygen saturation and pulse monitoring (as needed) before and during the trek.

This proactive step helps us:

• Detect early signs of altitude sickness

• Make informed decisions for your safety

• Ensure every trekker remains fit and comfortable throughout the journey

3. Emergency Support & Medical Backup

  • Oxygen Cylinders & Medical Kit:

Altitude affects everyone differently. Our guides are equipped with portable oxygen cylinders and essential first-aid medicines for immediate use in case of altitude-related symptoms.

Tip for trekkers: Stay physically prepared — activities like running, cycling, and swimming greatly improve endurance at high altitudes.

  • Stretchers at Every Campsite:

In case of emergencies or injuries, stretchers are available at all campsites, ensuring a safe and swift evacuation to base camp for further care.

  • Radio Communication Across Camps:

Cell networks can be unreliable in the mountains. To bridge the gap, our camps and guides stay connected via a dedicated radio communication system, ensuring quick response in cases of bad weather, missing items, or medical needs.

4. Technical Support on Snowy Slopes

For treks involving snow-covered or technically challenging terrain, our trained technical team is deployed to assist. They ensure:

• Proper route safety

• Emergency handling

• Support in difficult sections like icy slopes or narrow ridgelines

With Trekkaro, you’re always in safe and experienced hands — so you can focus on what truly matters: the adventure of a lifetime.

Important Pre-Trek Information

• Last ATM – Bhatwari

Bhatwari is the last reliable ATM stop before reaching Gangotri (Basecamp). Make sure to withdraw sufficient cash here, as you may not find functional ATMs beyond this point.

• Mobile Network – Gangotri

Gangotri is the last location with a stable mobile signal, and even here, only BSNL, Jio & Airtel work consistently. Please complete all important calls and inform your family about limited connectivity during the trek. Once you leave Gangotri, mobile signals are generally unavailable.
